UNITED STATES PATENT GEORGE F. CONNER, OF PORT HURON, MICHIGAN.
REGULATOR FOR TRACTION-ENGINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 663,146, dat d D b 4, 1900. Application filed March 1, 1900. Serial No. 6,967. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. CONNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Port Huron, in the county of St. Clair and State of Michigamhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Regulators for Traction- Engines, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to a regulator for traction-engines; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
The invention is designed to be What I term a speed-regulator, and is applied to that portion of the engine which is commonly termed a governor.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows the engine in outline (inasmuch as the particular type of engine is immaterial) with the attachment. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the actuating T-lever, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the governor-rod or valve-stem.
In the drawings, A represents an engine, preferably a traction-engine. B represents an ordinary governor therefor of the centrifugal type.
0 represents a valve-stem connected with the governor.
D represents the arms cast integral with the stationary portions of the casting for the governor and valve and extend rearwardly. Secured on the valve-stem are two disks 0 and c, spaced apart and fixedly held in position. Pivoted on the arm or bracket D, at one side conveniently, is a lever-arm E, a short arm of which has a fork (1 formed thereon, loosely embracing the valve-stem between the disks thereon. The lever E is conveniently T-shaped, it having a vertical portion 6 on its rear end extending an equal distance in opposite directions above and below. To the ends of the T-head are secured stiff spiral springs F, extending rearward and having their ends connected to wire rods F, each rod extending to the rear of the machine and connected, respectively, to links G'and G, pivotally connected to the actuating-lever H above and below the fulcrum h thereof. This lever H is pivoted on a pin h, mounted in a suitable frame J, which is bolted to the engine by bolts passing through curved flanges k at the lower end of the frame. The lever H is provided with suitable locking mechanism L of any approved form of construction.
In practice it is often desired to facilitate orimpede the movement of the governor to increase its sensitiveness or to resist, as the case may be. In providing the above attachment it will be seen that by moving the actuating-lever and through theinstrumentality of the spring connections more or less pressure can be placed upon or taken from the valve-stem, the pressure acting through the T-headed lever. Thus by pulling the lever in one direction the tendency will be to raise the valve-stem, lettingmore steam into the cylinder, thus increasing the speed of the engine, while moving the lever in the opposite direction depresses the valve-stem and reduces the speed of the engine, while at the same time any dangerous or excess speed will be checked, as is usual, by the governor.
I desire it understood that various changes and modifications can be made in the construction and arrangement shown without departing from the nature and principle of-tho invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a regulator for traction-engines, the combination with the governor, of projections on the valve-stem thereof, a tilting lever-embracing the valve-stem between the projections, angular extensions on the lever extendingin opposite directions, an actuating-lever and yielding connections between said actuating-lever above and below the fulcrum thereof and with opposite ends of the extensions on said other lever, substantially as described.
2. In a traction-engine, the combination with the governor, of atilting lever attached to the valve-stem of said governor, and having opposite projections on its opposite end,
. springs connected with the ends of the said opposite projections, an actuating-lever, rods connecting the springs with the actuatinglever, and a pivot for the actuating-lever. located between said rods, substantially as described.
3. In a traction-engine, the combination with the engine and its governor, of atiiting comprising yielding portions, substantially lever arranged to engage with the valve-stem as described. 10
