To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, COLUMBUS G. SHIPLEY, .l r., a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery, in the State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Paper Boxes, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specication.
My invention relates more particularly to paper boxes of moderate size intended for the reception of such materials as the various kinds of cereal preparations used as breakfast foods, sugar, salt, and other granulated or pulverized substances and adapted to be sealed up and form retail packages of such material.
It has for its object the provision of a paper box for such purpose which can be more readily and effectively sealed up than those heretofore in use and which shall constitute as nearly an air-tight package as may be and one from which the granulated or powdered material cannot escape in the handling of the package.
To this end my improved box is constructed in the manner hereinafter described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a plan view of the cut and scored blank from which the box is folded; Fig. 2, a perspective view of one end of the folded box before it is closed; Fig. 3, a corresponding view showing the end partly closed; Fig. 4, a similar View showing the end completely closed; Fig. 5, a cross-sectional detail of the closed end of the box; Fig. 6, a perspective view corresponding to Fig. 2, showing a slight modification; Fig. 7, aview of such modification corresponding to Fig. 3, and Fig. 8 a view of it corresponding to Fig. A.
The same letters of reference are used to indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
The blank from which the box is formed (shown in Fig. l) is composed of the four sides A B C D and the end extensions thereof, which form the ends of the closed box. The side D is provided along its right-hand edge with an extension a, constituting a pastingiiap, adapted to be pasted to the inner face of the left-hand edge of the side A at ct' when the blank is folded into box form, Fig. 2. The four sides are provided along their opposite ends with extensions A' B' C D', separated from the sides A B C D by the scored or creased lines b and in the present instance themselves provided with second extensions A B C D", separated from the extensions A B C D by scored lines c. The end extensions B' B and D' D" are provided with diagonal creases d, andthe exten sions B" D are provided, in addition, with vertical creases d', connecting with the diagonal creases d d at the point of junction of the latter.
The blank above described is first folded into open-ended box form and the pastingflap c, secured to the inner face of the side A, Fig. 2. To then close the end of the box, the end extensions B' B" D D" are pressed inward and downward, folding along the creases d d', and the end extensions A' A" and C' C of the sides A C then pressed inward and downward, folding along the creases b c, until the parts are brought to the position shown in Fig. 3,`at which time the extensions A" C will stand vertically adjacent and facing each other, with the extensions B" D folded between them. The extensions A C' will at such time rest in horizontal position across the end of the box, the extensions B D' of the sides B D resting in horizontal position immediately beneath their opposite ends. Prior to the folding operation last described paste or glue is applied to the extensions A C", and when the'parts are brought to the position shown in Fig. 3 said extensions (with the interposed folded extensions B" D") are pressed tightly together in the position shown in said figure perpendicular to the end of the box. The opposing extensions A C of the sides A C being thusy iirmly secured together they are then bent downward toward one sideA or the other to horizontal position, and paste or glue being applied to the outer face of the extension A" or C or to the upper face of the extension A or C' they are secured in` flat condition to the end of the box,.as shown in Fig. Lt. The opposite end of the box after it-has received its contents is folded and closed in the saine manner.
Owing to the position occupied by the ex- IOO tensions A O when pasted together, 3, and the fact that unlimited pressure may be applied to them a tight closure of the end of the box may be effected before said extensions are bent down and secured to the end of the box, as in Fig. 4. Heretofore boxes of this general character have usually been provided simply with four entirely separated and disconnected end iiaps forming extensions of the side walls of the box, and before closing the first end of the box it has been the practice to insert in the open-ended box a block or form snugly fitting it and upon the end of which the end flaps may be bent down one \`:5l upon another and pasted together to close theid of the box. When, however, it came to closingthe second end of the box after the block or form had been removed and the box filled with the material for which it was intended, there Was no form or support Within the box upon which the end iiaps of the sec! ond or open end could be bent down and firmly pressed together excepting the loose contents of the box, and even where the box was completely filled with such contents it oered a very uneven and unsubstantial sui'- face to receive the pressure applied to the end flaps in bending them down one upon the other and securing them together. The result has been that it has been extremely dithcult and as a rule impossible to properly and effectively close and seal such packages, so as to make them approximately air-tight, or even so as to prevent their contents from sifting out of them in the handling of the packages. Under my improved construction and owing to the fact that the end flaps are firmly securedv together in a position perpendicular to the end of the box, so that unlimited pressure may be applied to them by any suitable means, it follows that a tight closure for both ends of the box may be readily effected.
Under the construction .above described the two raw edges of the end extensions Al C are left exposed in the completely-folded box, Fig. 4, and also the edges of the interposed folded extensions B D. If this be considered objectionable and it be desired to improve the finish of the box, the modification shown in Figs. 6, 7, and 8 may be employed, in which part of the end extensions A B D" are cut away, leaving the end extension C projecting above them, such projecting portion forming a final pasting-flap adapted to be secured to the upper surface of the extension A, as in Fig. S, and thereby leave exposed only the edge of the side extension C and forming a neater finish than in the construction first described. s
While the foregoing represents the preferred construction of my improved box and my preferred mode of folding and closing its ends, nevertheless some modification in the details of construction and still greater modification in the manner of folding and closing the ends of the box may be made Without may be entirely omitted without otherwise affecting either the construction or the mode of folding and closing theends of the'box, resulting, however, in a less efficient and less air-tight closure of the end of the box than Vwhere said extensions are employed and confined betweenthe extensions A C" when the latter are secured together,as in Figs. 3 and '7.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim*- 1. The hereinedescribed box-blank, com; posed of the sides AB CD,the end extensions A B C D thereof separated therefrom by the creases b, and the supplemental end'extensions A C separated from the extensions A O by the creases c parallel with the creases b, the extensions B being provided with the diagonal creases d d, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The herein-described box-blank, comp posed of the sides A B C D,the end extensions A B C D thereof separated therefromby the creases Z), and the supplemental end extensions A B C D separated from the exl tensions A B C D by the creases c parallelwith the creases b,the extensions B B and D Dll being provided with the diagonal creases d d, and the extensions B D" with the creases d', substantially as and for the purpose set forth. p
The herein-described paper box, composed of the side walls A B C D, end extensions thereof A B C D constituting the end walls of the closed box, and supplemental extensions A C constituting pasting-flaps and having their inner faces pasted together to close the end of the box and bent downward upon and secured to the end wall of the box, substantially as set forth.
4. The herein-described paper box, composed of the side walls A B C D, the end extensions Al B C D thereof constituting the end Walls of the box, and the supplemental extensions A" B" C D", the extensions A C constituting pasting-flaps having their inner faces pasted together with the extensions B D interposed between them, to close the end of the box, substantially as set forth.
5. The herein-described paper box, composed of the side walls A B C D, the end extensions A B' C Dl thereof constituting the end walls of the box, and the supplemental IOO IIO
