SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 663,027', dated December 4, 1900. Application iled February 23., 1900. Serial No. 61146. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Beit known that I, ARTHUR HERSCHMANN, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Generators, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Thisinvention relates to steam-generators.
Io The object of theinvenlion is to provide an apparatus of small dimensions and compact structure which will be capable of making steam rapidly and provided with features rendering it well adapted for use upon selfpropelled vehicles. Among the requirements of such a boiler may be mentioned the ability to get up steam quickly, small size for a given horse-power, and adaptability in shape for convenient disposition upon the Vehicle.
zo The invention consists of the constructions and combinations hereinafter fully, described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical section of my improved boiler, and
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same on line oc a; of Fig. l.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A represents the outer cylindrical shell, provided with the brackets d for supporting it on any 3o suitable framework. Inside of this shell is another shell B, constituting the re and tube chamber. At the lower end of this chamber is the grate C, and the upper end is closed by a tube-sheet D, the center of which is open 3 5 to provide a passage for the fuel, which passage is formed by a short length of pipe d, passing from the tube-sheet upward through the center of the top of the outer shell, where it is closed by a cover d. This cover is car- 4o ried at the end of a lever e, which is pivoted to the bracket e', somewhat remote from the edge of the cover, so that when the cover is" lifted for the admission of fuel by swinging the outer end of the lever downward it will leave the entire opening clear.
The grate C is formed of two semicircular parts, with their diametrical sides parallel and hinged by means of rods c, resting in brackets c. The parts of the grate are nor- 5o nially supported in the same horizontal plane by latches c2, which engage angular projections c3 from the edges of the grate-sections. By lifting these latches the two sections of the grate will swing downward toward each other and dump the contents of the grate. No claim is made herein to this form of grate. The tubes for the circulation of the water are indicated at f. They are vertical for the greater part of their length and are arranged in a nest in the irechamber, surrounding the 6o vertical axis thereof. The upper ends of the tubes project through the tube-sheet D, and
their lower ends are curved outward immediately above the iire and pass laterally through the shell ofthe fire-chamber. The water occupies the annular space between the two shells A B, the normal water-line being slightly above the tube-sheet D, the space above the water-line being for steam,as usual. Thus it will be seen that the tubes furnish 7o circulatory passages of great capacity which bring the water into close relation with the burning fuel.
For the purpose of distributing the heat throughout the entire nest of tubesI divide the smoke-flue into two parts and connect them with the fire-chamber at the upper end thereof and at diametri'cally opposite points, as indicated at s and s. In this way the products of combustion instead of being directed into 8o contact with 'the tubes on one side of the boiler are caused to make substantially equal Contact with all the tubes. The two smokeflues lead directly into a semicircular pipe s2, which embraces one-half of the exterior of the boiler and connects with the base of the stack S, leading vertically upward at the rear of the boiler. This passage for the fuel is continued below the tube-sheet D by a coil of pipe G, extending nearly to the bed of fuel.` 9o This coil, besides giving shape tothe fuelpassage, also serves as a baiiie to direct the heat and products of combustion toward the sides of the fire-chamber where the tubes are located, and it also serves as a superheating device for the steam. For the last-mentioned purpose one end of the coil (indicated by g) leads upward through the fuel-passage d,then laterally outward, and finally to the steamspace of the boiler through the pipe g. To roo this pipe g there is also connected a safety- ,valve h and a valve t', by which steam may be cut oi entirely from the coil G. The other end of the coil G (indicated by g2) also leads upward through the fuelpassage and then by pipe g3 to the engine or other steam-consuming apparatus. It will be seen that the su pporting-coil exposes a large surface to the direct action of the heat and that the pressure of the steam passing through it from the` steam-space Will be materially increased.
Immediately surrounding the fire-space of the boiler, Where it Will be subjected to the` greatest heat, I locate a hollow ring R, which communicates by means of the pipe rwith the exhaust-passage of an engine. Another pipe r/ connects with the ring at a point di-` therefore eliminate the objectionable feature of the exhaust of the engine and is to that extent Well adapted for use in a self-propelled vehicle.
While it has been stated that this boiler is specially adapted for self-propelled vehicles, it is to be understood that'its use extends to all other conditions to which steam-boilers are applicable.
Having described my invention, l claim- In a Vertical steam-boiler, the combination of a fire-chamberprovided with a nest of vertical tubes arranged in a circle around an axial fuel-passage, a cylindrical ba-ler in the form ot a coiled tu be, lining the circular nest of tubes and giving shape to the fuel-passage, and two smoke-lines arranged at diametrically opposite points substantially as and for the purposeset forth.
In Witness whereof I subscribe my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ARTHUR HERSOI-IMANN.
