PATENT tribal MAGNUS SWENSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERICAN COTTON COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COTTON CONDENSER,
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 662,887, dated. November 27, 1900.
A li ti fil d February 24:, 1900- Serial No. 6,383. \No modem .To (LZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAGNUS SWENSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicage, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Cotton-Condensers, of which the following is a description.
My invention relates to improvements in cotton-condensers; and the object of the invention is to provide a condenser wherein a very thick, homogeneous, and uniform bat of cotton may be formed.
The objection to cotton-condensers as now constructed is that only a comparatively thin bat can be formed thereon. It has been proposed to use two condenser-cylinders, each forming a bat and turning in opposite directions, whereby a hat of double thickness can be secured. With my improved condenser I am enabled to make a bat of any desired thickness and which at the same time shall be uniform and homogeneous.
Broadly stated, my invention consists in providing a condenser-cylinder on which a bat or sheet is formed and the usual means for removing the sheet or bat therefrom and a second condenser-cylinder on which a sheet or bat is formed, the sheet or bat from the second condenser-cylinder being directed to the first cylinder and being removed from the first cylinder with the bat which is formed on the first cylinder. Such a construction is distinguished from the usual double-cylinder condensers now employed in that with the latter the sheet or bat formed on each cylinder is removed separately therefrom. Instead of using only two condensercylinders it will be obvious that a greater number may be em 'ployed, each forming its own bat and passing it in turn to the succeeding cylinder.
In order that the invention may be better un derstood, attention is directed to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification and showing in section a well-known form of double drum condenser equipped with two additional condenser-cylinders in accordance with my present invention.
1 is the flue, which leads from the gin or gins and along which the cotton in the form of light flakes is blown.
2 and 3 represent the ordinary condensercylinders of a well-known doublecondenser, and 4- at the doffer-rollers for removing the sheets or bats therefrom. These rollers are openended, as is usual, and communicate with the flue 5, through which the blast escapes. 6 and 7 represent two additional condenser-cylinders, also connected at their ends with the line 5 and shown in this instance as being mounted vertically above the cylinder 2, but obviously capable of being located in any other position adjacent to said cylinder orto the cylinder 3. Suitable means are provided for driving the condenser-cylinders in the directions indicated by the arrows. It will be obvious that a hat 8 will be formed on the condenser-cylinder 3, and a bat 9 will be formed on the condenser-cylinder 2, which bats will be drawn off from said condensercylin ders by the doflier-rolls 4 4- in the usual way. A bat 10 will be formed on the condenser-cylinder 7, and a bat 11 will be formed on the condenser-cylinder 6, these bats being fed off of said cylinders onto the condensercylinder 2, as shown, so that the bat which finally emerges between the dofi'er-rolls a 4 will be approximately four'times as thick as that which would be obtained by employing a single condenser'cylinder. If desired, the condenser-cylinders 6 and 7 may be provided with dotfer-rollers 12 12 to insure the positive stripping off of the sheets or bats therefrom.
Having now described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
1. An improved condenser comprising in combination a condenser-cylinder on which a sheet or bat is formed, means for withdrawing the sheet or bat therefrom, and a second condenser-cylinder adjacent to the first and on which a sheet or bat is formed, the sheet or bat from the second condenser cylinder being directed to and carried around by the first and being removed from the same by the bat-withdrawing device, substantially as set forth.
2. An improved condenser comprising in combination a condenser cylinder on which a sheet or bat is formed, means for withdrawing the sheet or bat therefrom, a second condenser-cylinder adjacent to the first and on which a sheet or bat is formed, the sheet or bat from the second condenser-cylinder being directed to the first and being removed from the same by the bat-Withdrawing device, and a third condenser-cylinder adjacent to the second and on which a sheet or bat is formed which is directed successively to the second and first condenser-cylinders and removed from the latter by the bat-Withdrawing device thereof, substantially as set forth.
3. In a condenser, the combination of a condenser cylinder, a doffer roll cooperating therewith, and a second condenser-oylinder adjacent to the first and feeding a sheet or bat to and which is carried around by the first cylinder, substantially as set forth.
4- In acondenser, the combination of a condenser cylinder, a doffer roll cooperating therewith, a second condenser-cylinder adjacent to the first and feeding a sheet or bat to and which is carried around by the first cylinder, and a doffer-roll for the second cylinder, substantially as set forth.
5. In a condenser, the combination of a condenser-cylinder, a doffer-roll therefonand two additional condenser-cylinders arranged in line adjacent to the same and forming separate sheets or bats which are directed to the first cylinder, substantially as set forth.
6. In a condenser, the combination With a pair of condenser-cylinders and doffer-rolls, of an additional cylinder arranged adjacent to one of said cylinders and forming a separate sheet or bat which is directed to the adjacent cylinder, substantially as set forth.
This specification signed and witnessed this 20th day of February, 1900.
MAGNUS SWENSON.
