This invention relates to certain improvements in web leading devices for rotary printing machines.
in rotary web printing machines, particularly multi-couple machines, the web, for the printing operation, has to be led or threaded between the form and the impression cylinders of the printing couples. To get the web through the couples, it is necessary that the couples be rotated, and while the threading speed is low the pressman has to get his fingers or his arms closely adjacent the bite of the cylinders to get the web through. This frequently results in injuries to the hands or arms of the pressman.

In the machine illustrated there is provided a printing couple including a form cylinder 1 and an impression cylinder 2, these cylinders being mounted as usual on shafts 3 supported in side frames 4-. of the machine. form cylinder 1 is inked from a distributor 5 and the usual distributing rolls 6. In the machine illustrated there is also provided a perfecting couple including a form cylinder 7 and an impression cylinder 3 supported on shafts 9 taking bearing in the side frames of the machine, the form cylinder 7 being inked from a distributor 10 and distributing rolls 11, as is usual.
The web is led over the usual web guiding roll 12 to and between the cylinders 1, v2 of the first printing couple. In accordance with the invention a web support is provided on which the pressman may lay the end of the web and push it into the bite of the cyliu ders, which, as before stated, are turning very slowly and which actto seize the web and d aw it onward. lVhile this web support or guide may assume various forms, in the pa ticular construction illustrated this support is in the form of a plate 13 of metal or other suitable material having a smooth surface so that the web can be readily pushed along it. This plate is mounted below one of the cylinders, as the impression cylinder '2,
and is supported on arms 14 carried on a shaft 15 supported from brackets 16 secured to the side frames t of the machine, before referred to. This plate, as shown, extendsa sufiicient distance beyond the leading-in side of the cylinders so that the web may be conveniently placed thereon. The other end of this plate extends toward the impression or contact point of the cylinders and within their peripheries, the plate thus extending a sufficient distance so that the web is readily pushed into the bite of the cylinders, and in the best constructions this end of the plate is curved, as indicated at 17.
l/Vith this construction it is apparent that the pressman may-take the web and push it up the smooth surface of the plate until it is taken by the cylinders, and at no time is it necessary for him to get his handsor arms anywhere near the contact point of the cylinders, the directing of the web being effected from a point well beyond the first cylinder of the couple. Accidents are, therefore, largely eliminated and at the same time the. press is easily and quickly threaded.
lVhile a convenient construction for effecting the invention is that illustrated, it will be understood, of course, that certain changes may be made in the shape and arrangement ot the plate supports without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
What I claim is: V
1. In a printing machine, the combination of a printing couple including a form cylinder and an impression cylinder arranged for impression contact on a web, and a web guard and guide over which the web may be pushed by hand for web threading, said guard including a plate extending to one side of one or the cylinders on which the oporator may his hands when moving the Web for threading, the plate extending on the other side towardand between the peripheries of the form and impression cylin ders, so that the operator may start the Web into the bite Oi the "form and impression cylinders at a pointaway from the contact point of the cylinders.
2. In a printing machine, the combination of aprinting couple including a form cylinder and an impression cylinder arranged for impression contact on a web, and a web guide and guard located below one of the cylinders and having a web receiving surface extending substantially the width of the cylinder at one side thereof on which the operator may lay his hands for pushing the web into the bite of the cylinders, the guide on its other side projecting between the peripheries of the cylinders, so that an operator may thread the web into the bite of the cylinders at a point distant from the point of impression contact of the cylinders.
In a printing machine, the combination of a printing couple, including a form cylinder and an impression cylinder arranged for impression contact on a Web a web guide, a guide and guard plate located below the cylinders, on which the end of a web may be pushed or shoved into the bite of the cylinders, said plate extending widthwise of the cylinders having a curved end projecting toward the contact points or the cylinders and inside the peripheries thereof, so that the operator may thread the web into the bite of the cylinders at a point away from the point of impression contact.
