TTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
STEPHEN F. OI-IEHEYL, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE CASLER- ALTON-CLARKE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
ADJUSTABLE BRACKET.
SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent N 0. 661,755, dated November 13, 1900.
Application filed April 7, 1899. Serial No. 712,147. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, STEPHEN F. OHEHEYL,a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, county of Ouyahoga, and State of 5 Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Brackets, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated 1o applying that principle so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
The annexed drawings and the following description set forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexed drawings, Figure I represents a perspective View of my improved bracket. Figure II represents a partial section and side elevation. Fig. III represents an enlarged detail cross-section .and Figs. IV and V represent a detail and a front elevation of portions of the device, respectively.
My improved bracket consists of a horizontal member A, a supporting member B, and an inclined member 0. The horizontal member A is formed with an angle a, formed with an opening a, through which passes a screw a provided with a thumb-nut 0, Fig. IV. The supporting member is provided with a series of keyhole-apertures b, Fig. V, consisting of a lower slotted portion and an upper circular portion, the distance between two successive apertures being substantially equal to the perpendicular distance from the center of the opening a and the lower end of the inclined member 0. The end of said inclined member is screw-threaded and is engaged by a threaded nut 0, having a thumb-piece c, Fig. III. The extremity of said nut is formed with a circular groove 0, of rectangular crosssection, the diameter of said nut in said groove being substantially equal to the width of the slotted portion of one of the apertures b. The circular portion of each aperture 17 is of a diameter such that it will admit the head of screw or or the end of the nut 0, said screwhead and nut end being made, preferably, of the same size. Itis thus seen that the horizongo tal and inclined members may be secured to the supporting member by passing the screwhead and the nut end through the circular por .tions of two successive apertures b and lowering both, soas to cause the screw-body and the grooved portion of the nut O to-engage the slotted apertures, as shown in Fig. II.
By screwing down the thumb-nut a it is seen that the Whole structure is securely fastened.
The slotted portion of the lower aperture 1) forms a bearing for the extremity of nut C,
which may be rotated, so as to lengthen and shorten the inclined member 0, by screwing onto or olf the end of said member. By so making said inclined member adjustable it is seen that the outer end of the horizontal member may be raised or lowered to secure a perfectly horizontal position of said member when it is desired.
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means covered by the following claim he employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention- A bracket consisting of a horizontal member, a supporting member provided with a STEPHEN F. OHEI-IEYL.
