Allldtld'll'ABLE STl RlRUP- 'BAR FOR PHYSlClANS TABLES.
SPECIFIG.1.'I'ION forming part of Letters Patent No. 661,433, dated November 6, 1900.
Application filed December 20, 1899. tSerial No. 740,951. \NO model-l To all whom 2 2? nuty concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. ALLISON, acit-izen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Adjustable Stirrup-Bar for Physicians Tables, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in adjustable stirrup-bars for physicians tables.
Physicians operating-tables such as that found in Patent No. (312,373, issued to me October 11, 1898, are provided with a pair of adjustable s1irrup'supporting bars by means of which a foot-supporting stirrup may be placed at any desired angle, either horizontal or vertical, in order to support the patients leg in proper position for examinations of various kinds. The supporting means for the stirrup or bar is necessarily in such position that the operating physician often and unconsciously comes in contact therewith, and heretofore many instances are known where considerable damage to the patient has been done by the operator accidentally coming into contact with the stirrup supporting means, and thus allowing the patients leg to drop suddenly.
The object of my invention is to provide an adjusting means of such form that while being easily operated and in a convenient position it will be impossible for the same to become accidentally displaced, so as to allow the stirrup-bar to shift.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.
Figure l is a perspective view thereof. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section. Fig. 3 is a plan.
In the drawings, 4 indicates a stem, at the upper end of which is formed a pair of lips or tongues 5, between which may be titted the head 6 of a stirrup-bar 7. Head 6 is pivoted upon a pin 8, supported bylips 5, and is pro vided on its periphery with a series of ratchetteeth 9. Extending from stem 4 is an arm 10, to which is pivoted a latch 11. Latch 11 is provided with an arm 12, adapted to engage any one of teeth 9 and an operating-arm 13 which is extended up alongside the adjacent lip 5. Mounted between the adjacent lip 5 and arm 13 is a spring M, which forces arm 13 outward and holds arm 12 normallyin engagement with the periphery of head 6.
Exten ding from the adjacent lip 5, and preferablyintegral therewith, is aguard 15, which guard embraces the upper end of arm 13 of the latch 11 and extends out a short distance beyond the outer position of said arm 13, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, the arrangement being such that latch 11 may only be operated by the insertion of some instrument, such as the thumb, within guard 15.
For the purpose of rigidly but adjustably holding the stirrup-bar at any desired horizontal angle I form upon stem 4, preferably upon the side opposite arm 10, a series of teeth 16, which are arranged concentric with the stem 4;. Secured to the side of the table 17 is a vertical eye 18, which is adapted to receive stem at. Formed upon eye 18 is a tooth 19, which is adapted to enter between any two of teeth 16, the arrangement being such that the stem 4 is rigidly held against rotation and may only be shifted by being lifted vertically, so as to withdraw teeth 16 from engagement with teeth 19.
The operation is obvious, and it will be no ticed that both adjusting means are such that the stirrup-bar when placed in any desired position, either vertical or horizontal, cannot he accidentally thrown out of position.
I claim as my invention 1. A stirru p-bar for physicians tables, consisting of a stem, a pair of lips carried by said stem, a stirrup -supporting bar pivoted between said lips and having a series of ratchet teeth, a latch arranged to engage said ratchetteeth and having its operating-arm extending up alongside the adjacent lip, and a guard extending from said lip beyond and embraciugsaid operating-arm. 2. Astirrup-bar forphysicians tables, c011- sisting of a stem, a pair of lips carried by said stem, a stirrup -sup )orting bar pivoted between said lips and having a series of ratchetteeth, a latch arranged to engage said ratchet teeth and having its operating-arm extending up alongside the adjacent lip, a guard extend ing from said lip beyond and embracing said operating-arm, a series of teeth carried by said stem and concentric therewith, an eye adapted to receive said stem, and a tooth carried by said eye in position to be embraced by any adjacent pair of said concentric teeth.
WILLIAM D. ALLISON.
