Be it known that I, RUDOLPH HOFFMAN, a resident of Lorain, Lorain county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes or Receptacles; and Ido hereby declare the followingto be a fnll, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to Which it pertains to make and use the same.

'lhis invention relates to improvements in boxes or receptacles more especially designed for convenience in supplying the tire-box or fuel-chamber' of a stove or grate with kin- The object of this invention `is to provide a box or receptacle of the character indicated that can be used as a receptacle for waste paper, that has its bottom composed of two sections hinged to the body portion of the receptacle and normally held closed, and that is provided with means for simultaneously operating the said bottom-forming sections, so that kindlings placed within the recep-y tacle upon the waste paper that has accumulated in the receptacle and coal or fuel placed within the receptacle on top of the kindlings shall upon holding t-he receptacle over a fireboX orfuel-cha1n ber and thereupon actu ating the bottom-forming sections into an open p0- sition be deposited in proper order Within'the fuel-chamber. t

With this object inview the invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is a top plan of a receptacle embodying my invention. Fig. II is a transverse vertical section on either one of lines II II, Fig. I, looking in the direction of the arrow. Figs. III and IV are illustrations in detail, showing the manner of rendering the latch employed in locking the mechanism that is instrumental in actuating the bottom-forming sections of the receptacle operative in the closed position of the said sections. Fig. V is a longitudinal vertical section on either one of lines V V, Fig. II.

sembled in any approved manner. The re.- cept-acle is provided with a hail b, that straddles the receptacle centrally and longitudinally and is pivoted in any approved manner, as at b, tothe upper portions of the sections 7.

The receptacles bottom is composed of two Sections c and c, that are hinged, asat c', to

the lower ends of the different side sect-ions,l

respectively, horizontally and longitudinally of the receptacle, and one of the said bottomforming sections c ispreferably somewhat widerthan the other bottom-forming section,

as at c2, in the closed position tions c.

Preferably a bead-forming piece or section of wiree extends around and snugly embraces the body portion of the receptacle at the botof the said sect0m, and the end sections 7'ot` the receptacle have their lower 'ends bent in under a'ud over the outer side ot' the said wire section e. The side sections 6 of* the receptacle are bent in under and over the outer sides of the wire section e, `that forms the pintle of the hinge connection between the bottom-forming sections and the side sections of the receptacle, andthe portions of the side sections that are thus bent over the wire section e are cut away, as at 8, to accommodate the4 location and operation of the sleeves c3, tha't are formed upon the bottom-forming sections and journaled upon the aforesaid wire section e and that in connection with the said pintle-forming wire section constitute the hinge connection between the bottom-forming sections and the side sections.

Each bottom-forming sectionterminates at its ends in inwardly-projecting flanges c4, that are arranged to overlap the outer sides of the end sections of 4the receptacle in the closed position ot' the bottom-forming sections. The bottom-forming sections c and c at one end of the receptacle are operatively connectedby means ot' different links fandf, respectively,

with a vertically-arranged.slide-forming bar g, that is arranged to slide up and down one side of the adjacent end section of the receptacle and engages a correspondin g verticallyarranged slideway that is formed by a side of the said end section of the receptacle at one side of the bar g, and a strap h, that straddles the said bar g from the opposite side of the bar and is soldered or otherwise secured to the said end section of the receptacle.

A latchZis pivoted horizontally and longitudinally of the receptacle, as at Z', to the upper end of the bar g. The strap 7L extends, preferfahiy, to or in close proximity to the upper extremity of the receptacle, and the arrangement of the parts is such that the upper end of the bar q when it is in its elevated position during the closed position ofthe bottomforming sections shall project far enough above the guide-forming strap h to permit the tilting of the latch above the said guide Zt into a horizontal position, so as to accommodate a sliding of the latch upon the pivot Z across or over the upper end of the guide h, and thereby lock the bottom-formin, sections in their closed position, and of course the pivot-engaging hole Z2 of the latch is elongated longitudinally of the latch to accommodate a 1ongitudinal actuation of the latch upon the pivot and across the upper end of the guide h, as aforesaid. The latch has its outer end provided with a handle Z2 for convenience in operating the same.

In the normal position of the parts, therefore, the bar or slide g is in its elevated position, and the latch Zextends horizontally over the guide ZL, and the pivot Z engages that end of the slot Z2 that is nearest the handle Z3, and the bottom-sections c and c ar'e in their closed position, as shown in solid lines, Figs. I and II. In rendering the latch Zinoperative preparatory to actuating the bottom-sections c into an open position the latch is first actuated endwise in the direction required to bring the opposite end of the slot Z2 in engagement with the pivot Z, as shown in Fig. III, whereupon the latch is tilted upwardly into line with the bar or slide g, as vshown in Fig. IV, when the latch can be lowered as required to actuate the said bar or slide g into its lower position, and thereby tilt downwardly and swing apart and open the bottom-forming sections'c, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. II.

What I claim isl. The combination, with abox orreceptacle having a bottom composed of two suitably-supported vertically-tiltable sections, of an upright bar movable up and down the rcceptacle, two links operatively connecting said bar with the different bottom-forming sections, respectively, means for guiding the bar and comprisinga strap that straddles the bar from one side of the said bar and is rigid with the body portion of the receptacle, and a latch pivoted to the bar and having the 'pivot-engaging hole elongated longitudinally of the latch, and the arrangement of parts being such that, in the closed or normal position of the aforesaid bottom-forming sections, the latch is in position at and externally of one end of the aforesaid guide-forming strap and capable of being slid endwise upon the pivot of the pivotal connection formed between the latch and the aforesaid bar, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination with a box or receptacle having a bottom composed of two suitably-supported vertically-tiltable sections, of an upright bar movable up and down thereceptacle, two links operatively connecting the said bar with the diierent bottom-forming sections, respectively, means for guiding the bar and comprising a strap that straddles the bar from one side of the latter and is rigidly secured to thebody portion of the receptacle and extends to, or in close proximity to, the receptacles upper extremity, and a latch pivoted to the upper end of the aforesaid bar and having the pivot-engaginghole elongated longitudinally of the latch, all arranged and operating substantially as shown, for the purpose specified.
