Be it known that I, FREDERIO W. ROEBBEL, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tool-Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
This invention relates to tool-holders for lathes; and it consists of the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter shown, described, and claimed.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my improved tool-hold'er. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective. Fig. 3 is a top'plan' view of the same. Fig. 4 is an enlarged plan view with parts broken away. Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken approximately on the line a a of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a view in perspective, showing differentparts of the gripping device made use of in carrying out my invention. Fig. '7 is a vertical sectional elevation of a modified form of my improved tool-holder. Fig. Sis a crosssection of a part of the same.
In the construction of this device I provide a suitable tool-support 1, enlarged at its forward end 2 and provided with a squared .aperture 3, through which the chisel 4 may be passed and retained by means of a suitable lock which I provide for that purpose. Within the upper side of the support 1 is an elongated and deepened slot 5, the same communicating with the aperture 3 and having in its rear end a roundedelevation 6. As may be seen in the drawings, the aperture 3 is sloping through the support 1, and I provide a lock comprising the T-shaped member 7, in the forward end of which is a V-shaped slot 8, which forms one corner of the aperture 3 when the lock is in position. In the rear end of the said lock is a rounded excision 9, corresponding with the elevation 6, and the said lock is provided with a slight projection 10, which at all times rests upon the elevation 6 and holds the entire remaining portion of the lock out of contact with the support 1, except the forward end thereof, Fig. 1, which also is out of contact when the chisel 4 is in use. The
arrangement of the slot 8 is such that the forward end of the lock is held from the support 7 1 by the chisel 4 when the same is in use. By this arrangement it may be seen that when pressed downwardly by the screw 11 of a tool-post the chisel will be very tightly gripped and cannot be removed except by loosening the look.
In the modification shown in Figs. 7 and 8 I provide the apertured bosses 12, the lower part of the aperture through the support 1- being screw-threaded. Through the said aperture is passed the screw-bolt 12 the threads on the lower end of which engage with the threads in the support 1, and by turning the said bolt the same gripping power may be impart-ed to the lock 7 as by the screw 11 of the tool-post. By using this form of tool-holder the support 1 can be made of any length and supported by the tool-post at any desired distance therefrom. At the same time the chisel can be held rigidly in place by means of the screw-bolt 12.
A tool-holder of this improved construction presents many advantages over all others. The chisel can be adjusted while the support is still in thetool-post by slightly loosening the screw 11. The same screw is used to hold the device in the tool-post and to tighten the lock, and thus many parts which are necessary in devices of the usual construction are eliminated. The device is simple, easily operated, and nogreat cost is in volved in its construction.
I claim-- 1. Atool-holder,comprisingagrooved member having an aperture in its forward end, a cuttercarried in said aperture, aT-shaped lock carried by said grooved member, its forwith said lock, for hearing on the said elevation, substantially as specified.
