Description

No. 660,748. Patented Oct, 30,1900.
w. BUSH. GAS RELEASING BIT.
(Application filed July 24, 1900.: (No Model.)
. v INVENTOI? X a M UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILBERN BUSH, OF WIOHITA HEIGHTS, KANSAS.
GAS-RELEASING BIT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 660,748, dated October 30, 1900. Application filed July 24, 1900. Serial N0. 24,718. (No model.)
To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILBERN BUSH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at tVichita Heights,in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Animal- Bits, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, and the figures of reference thereon, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of myimproved animal-bit. Fig. 2 is a side view of the mouthpiece. Fig. 3 is an end View of said bit. Fig. 4B is a sectional view of one of the end pieces. Fig. 5 is an edge view of the same.
This invention relates to certain improvements in animal-bits; and it consists in the construction of the same; and the object of my invention is to produce a bit for the purpose of preventing cows and sheep from dying from gas in the stomach caused by eating wet cane or alfalfa.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a hollow mouthpiece. 2 represents openings in the side of said mouthpiece, which may be made in any desirable shape. 3 represents arms leading from said mouthpiece to the bridle-rings 7. 4 represents lugs on the lower end of said arms to receive the threaded ends 6 of said mouthpiece.
5 represents threads on the inside of lugs 4. Said lugs 4 and arms 3 are open. 8 represents springs secured at 9 to said arms 3. Said springs are provided with the enlarged ends 10 and washers 13. 11 represents a hole in said enlarged end 10 and Washer 13 to receive the bolt or rivet 12. Said enlarged end 10 and Washer 13 are for the purpose of yieldingly closing said openings in said arm, lug, and mouthpiece.
This bit is made and used in the following manner: The mouthpiece is made hollow, with openings of any desired shape in the upper side. Thearms 3 are for the purpose of holdingthesprings8. Thebitisheldin themouth by a strap passing from the rings 7over the head. The spring 8 is made to yield outwardly very easily. When cows or sheep eat wet cane or alfalfa, it forms a gas in the stomach which a cow or sheep will belch and throw off; but when it forms fast they will not open their mouths to allow the gas to escape. When the gas getsinto the mouth when this bit is on, it will enter said bit through the holes 2 and press the spring 8 out at the lower end and escape. The ends of said bit are, closed with the washers 13 and the enlarged ends 10, so the animal can drink with the bit in the mouth.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
1. The herein-described bit consistingof a hollow mouthpiece with openings in the sides thereof, springs yieldingly closing the ends ofsaid hollow mouthpiece, and arms for holding said springs.
2. An animal-bit consisting of a mouthpiece hollow from end to end, openings in the upper side of said mouthpiece, arms secured to each end of said mouthpiece with rings for holdingsaid bitin the mouth through the medium of straps passing over the animals head and secured to said rings, springs secured at one end to said arms, said springs having enlarged ends for yieldingly closing the open ends of said hollow mouthpiece, substantially as shown and for the purpose specified.
