LOCK.
(No Model.)
WITNESSES: INVENTORI I .ATTORNEY (UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BYRON PHELPS, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, ASSIGNOR OF ON E-HALF TO THEODORE NELSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
LOCK.
SFECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 660,736, dated October 30, 1900.
Application filed January 27, 1900. Serial No. 2,958. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, BYRON PHELPS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, King county, IVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in looks and latching mechanism; and my ohj ect is to improve the construction of the same.
One of my particular objects is to provide a lock having latch mechanism and side plates on two opposite sides of said mechanism, a spindle passing through one of said plates and connected with the latch mechanism to operate the same, the plate on the other side of said mechanism being adjustable to and from said latch mechanism, a spindle carried by said adjustable plate, and a longitudinallyadjustable latch operating connection between said latch mechanism and latter spindle, whereby said spindle and plate may be adjustable to and from said latch mechanism.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention shown in the drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan view, parts being broken away, of a lock embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a side viewof the same, the lefthand side plate having been removed, looking from left to right and parts being in section. Fig. 3 represents the same view as Fig. 2, but with the bolt thrown back by the thu mb-nut. Fig. at represents a detail showing the manner in which the latch mechanism is operated by the adjustable spindle.
In the embodiment shown in the drawings I have applied my invention to a lock which is adapted to be inserted in a notch in the stile of a door of the general construction claimed in my former patent, No. 626,340, dated June 6, 1899.
In the drawings, A represents the main frame, which I preferably use; but it will be obvious that the same is not necessary in some cases. This frame preferably supports the latch mechanism and may have two side plates B and C and a face-plate D, through an opening in which works a latch-bolt or head D. Pivoted to this latch-bolt is in this embodiment a yoke E, preferably having two legs ee', each of which may be provided with a foot 6 a A spindle-bearing F may be attached to the main frame and inclose a spindle G, having a knob gthereon. This spin dle is connected with the latch mechanism to operate the same, preferably by a roll-back H, the ends of which stand in front of the feet 6 e on the yoke, so that when the spindle is rotated in either direction the latchbolt will be thrown back. The spindle is preferably hollow at its inner end, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4:, and I prefer to pass the roll-back completely through the spindle, as shown, for the purposes which will be described hereinafter. The side plate 0 may be made adjustable to and from the latch mechanism and in this embodiment to and from the main frame also, as claimed in my said former patent.
To throw back the bolt from the side of the door on which the adjustable plate is located, I provide a rotatable spindle, carried by said adjustable plate, and a latch-operating connection between said spindle and latch mech anism, which allows the spindle to be longitudinally adjusted with respect to said mechanism. In this embodiment I have dispensed with a projecting spindle and knob, and in place thereof I have formed the spindle as a part of a preferably pin tumbler-lock passing through and attached to the side plate O. In this embodiment the rotatable key-barrel L of the pin tumbler-lock constitutes the spindle. The casing of this look is preferably cylindrical and fits a hole in the frame A to guide the plate 0, and I may also provide an internally-threaded lug c on the side plate, which may receive a screw 0, passing through the frame, so as to draw the plate 0 inward against the stile of the door and fasten the plate in any position desired. Between this spindle and the latch-operatin g mechanism that is, operatively connecting the same-is an adjustable connection, so that when the entire lock is inserted in the notch in the stile of a door the side plate may be adjusted to any thickness of door, yet the spindle L will be operatively connected with the latch mechanism. I am aware that the manner of making this connection may be widely varied; but I have in the present embodiment pro vided a pair of forward projections ll, at-
Games tached to the spindle L and forming a fork, (shown in section in Fig. 2, 3, and 4,) which may stand on each'side of the roll-back H. The projections Z Z, together with that part of the roll-back H which is engaged by said projections, form in this embodiment the latchoperating connection between the latch mechanism and the spindle, and as the fork can be movedback and forward while still inclosing said part of the roll-back the parts of the connection are adjustable with relation to each other. When a key is inserted in the key-barrel, the key-barrel may be rorated until one of the projections Z is brought into engagement with the roll-back, and the same can then be moved to throw back the latch, as shown in Fig. 4.
As shown in Figs, 2, 3, and 4, I have formed the projections. Z Z so that when in their-nor mal position (shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3) they will permit of the rotation of the spindle G far enough to throw back the latch without moving the spindle L. This is desirable in the present embodiment, because the key barrel is normally locked in position until key is inserted therein, and therefore provision should be made for the movement of the latch mechanism without rotating said bar rel. The roll-back H in this embodiment per forms the additional function of holding the spindle F in place, because said roll-back rests, against one side of the. frame, as shown in Fig. 1.
To throw back the latch and lock the same in its retracted position, I have provided a dog S, to which is connected a thumb-nut S,
by the rotation of which thumb nut the cam T on the dog is rotated, which will come in contact with a projection T from the yoke a d p s he same back from, the positio shown in Fig. 2 to that shown in Fig. 3.
I am aware t at very many changes may be made in the construction, heretofore shown and described Without departing from the spirit of my invention, and Itherefore do not wish to limit myself to the embodimenthere,-v in disclosed.
What I claim is 1.. In a lock in combinatio lat mec anism, a side plate'at one side of said latch mechanism, a spindle passing through and rotatable in said side plate and connected with said latch mechanism to operate the a e, a plate. at the other s e of a d, atch mechanism, said plate being adjustable to. and from said latch mechanism, a rotatable a latch-operating connection between. said latch mechanism and latter spindle, parts of which connection are adjustable with relation to each other by the movement of said adjust; able plate, whereby said latter spindle and plate may be. adjusted to, and from said latch mechanism.
