SEWING AND CUTTING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 660,617, dated October 30, 1900. Application filed September 7,1897. Serial No. 650,868. (llo model.;
',l'o a/Z w/tom/ t may concern:
Bc it k n own that I, BENJAMIN BIssINcER, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Chattanooga, in the county of Hamilton and State of Tennessee, have invented a certain new and useful Attachment to be Applied to Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification. p
illy invention relates to cutting attachments for sewing-machines, and has for its object to produce such an attachment by means of which pocket or like openings may be cut in the cloth orother material operated upon and the edges of the opening simultaneously stitched or bound.
In the drawings, Figure lis a perspective View of so much of a sewing-machine as is necessary to illustrate my invention having my improved attachment applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a front View of the lower end of the needle-bar detached and drawn to a larger scale than Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
In the drawings, A represents the head of a sewing-machine, which may be of any approved type or construction and in which is arranged the reciprocating needle-barB. At the lower end of the needle-bar there is arranged a cross-head or holder C for the needles D D and the cutter E. The cross-head is preferably removably attached to the needie-bar and is provided with suitable openings for the needles and the knife or cutter, and the latter are secured in the cross-head or holder by binding-screws F or other preferred securing means.
Gr represents the presser-foot, which is perforated at H H for the passage of the needles and is formed with a slot l, through which works the blade or cutter E. The throat-plate J is provided with apertures HH,correspond ing in position with the apertures H in the presser-foot, and with the slot I', corresponding in position with the slot I in the presserfoot.
The two needles D D are arranged in a vertical plane which is at right angles to the direclion of the feed of the machine, and the cutter-bar is mounted between the needles and has its cutting edge lying in a vertical plane which is at right angles tothe vertical plane including the needles and in position with such incision.
to be intersected by the said plane of the needles, which plane, as stated, is at right angles to the direction in which the material is fed when being operated upon. The cutting-blade is easily removable and is preferably shorter than the needles, and its cutting edge d is arranged at such an angle to the plane of the material to be cut that it severs the cloth with a shearing action.
'lhe attachment which I have described is adapted for the cutting and sewing or binding of pocket-openings in the manufacture of cloth, and particularly in the construction of pockets made according to my Patents Nos. 503,363 and 584,844. In the making and binding of such openings it is very desirable that the lines of stitching which are on each side of the opening cut should be both parallel with the incision and also conterminous therewith, and the arrangement of the needles and the cutter in the holder' C as described and shown is for the purpose of producing the desirable result above set forth.
In using a sewing-machine provided with my invention in the making of a pocket such as referred to the garment or cloth is placed in position upon the cloth-plate of the machine With the outside surface uppermost. The welt-piece, the facing, and the pocketblank are next placed in position at the point where it is desired to form the pocket and the presser-foot lowered thereon. The machine being started, the material is fed to the cutting and stitching mechanism, the knifeblade cutting a continuous incision therein and the needles forming a row of stitching on each side thereof,para1lel to and conterminous The welt-piece and facing may then be turned in through the pocketopening in the manner described in my said Letters Patent and again sewed from thein7 side, the blade D being during this operation removed, so that the needles alone may operate. The corners of the pocket may then be stitched and stayed in any desired manner.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
A pocket-cutting attachment for sewingmachines, comprising in combination with a suitable needle-bar, presser-foot, and throatplate, a cross-head or support carried by the IOO - needle-bar, a pair of needles mounted in such su pport and arrangedin a vertical plane which is at right angles to the line of feed of the material, and a rem ovable cutter-blade mounted I; between the needles and having its cutting edge lying in a Vertical plane at right angles m the plane of the needles and in position to be interseeted by the vertical planeineluding the needles, whereby the said attachment is adapted to eut a, longitudinal pocket-opening 1o in the material being operated upon, and to fovm conter-minous parallel lines 0f stitching on eachV side of the said opening, subst-antially as set forth.
