UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY WILLIAM CROWTHER, OF EXETER, ENGLAND.
SHOVEL FOR FIRING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 660,527, dated October 23, 1900.
Application filed February 26, 1900. Serial No. 6,629. (No model.)
T0 LZZ whom it may concern,.-
Beit known that l, HENEYWILLIAM CROW- THER, jeweler, residing at No. 2l Montpelier Terrace, Exeter, England, have invented certain Improvements in Shovels for Firing; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in or connected with shovels or scoops for firing; and it consists in a combined shovel or scoop and sifter provided with specialmeans for adapting it to the former use or the latter, substantially as hereinafter more partielllarly set forth and claimed.
The construct-ion and operation will be understood by reference to the drawings, in which- Figure l is a general perspective view. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation. Fig. 3 shows detail of cam action. Fig. 4 shows cam removed. Fig. 5 is a back view of shovel with long handle for furnace-firing.
The shovel is formed from iron, steel, or other metal plate of suitable gage, depending upon the character of the work it is intended to be used for, the plate l being stamped or bent up to shape and perforated with holes 2 of suiicient size. Above plate l is a loose or sliding plate la, similarly perforated and having a tailpiece 3, in which a slot 5 is formed and to which are fitted two pins 4. This loose plate is kept in position by the studs 4a, riveted into the sides 6, and by the tailpiece 3, which passes through a slot 5a in the back 7. To this is riveteda plate 8, carrying a socket 9, which is fitted with a wood or other suitable handle 10. A hole 1l is drilled through the socket 9 and plate 16, and in this is journaled a pin 12, to which is brazed or fitted a cam 13. On the top end of the pin is mounted a button or the like 14, and a washer l5 is riveted on its lower end.
The operation of myinventiou is as follows: When the shovel is used for firing clean coal, cinders, or the like, the button operating the cam is turned so as to cause the loose or sliding perforated plate l:L to cover the perforations, as in Fig. 2. With dusty fuel the button is turned, so as to bring the holes in the loose plate over those in the shovel, as in Fig.
3, by shaking which the dust is removed. The loose plate is locked in either position by the cam, which is prevented from turning beyond the prescribed distance by the pin 4 and the back of the shovel. By turning the button 14 the iring-shovel is at the will of the user converted into a sifter.
I may prolong the handle if required, (see Fig. 5,) so as to enable my improvements to be used for firing boiler or other furnaces.
I claiml. A shovel having a perforated bottom, in combination with a handle,a sliding plate having registering perforations and a slotted protruding tailpiece, means for guiding the said plate over the said bottom, a cam turning in the slot of the said tailpiece and moving the said plate into opening or closing position at will, and a pin or shaft turning with the said cam and extending up through the said han dle in order that it may be operated from a point above the same, substantially as set forth.
2. Ashovel havinga perforated bottom, in combination with a sliding plate having registering perforations and a slotted, protruding tailpiece, means for guiding the said plate over the said bottom, a cani turning in the slot of the said tailpiece and moving the said plate into opening or closing position at will, means for operating the said cam and a stop for limiting the turning of the said cam that it may lock the said plate in one position or the other when turned, substantially as set forth.
3.' A shovel having a perforated bottom, in combination with a sliding plate having registering perforations and a slotted, protruding tailpiece, a cam turning in the slot of the said Vtailpiece and moving the said plate into opening or closing position at will, a stop for limiting the turning of the said cam that it may lock the said plate in one position or the other when turned, an axially-movable operating-pin for said cam, journaled inthe handle of the shovel and a button for the upper end of the said pin above the said handle, for convenience of working by the operators fingers, substantially as set forth.
4. A shovel having a perforated bottom in combination with a sliding plate having registering perforations and a slotted protruding ICO tailpieee, means for guiding the said plate over the said bottom, a cam turning' in Vthe slot of the said tailpieee and moving the said plate into opening or Closing posit-ion at Will, a stop for limiting the turning` ofthe said Gam 'that it may look the said plate in one position or the other when turned, an axially-movable operating-pin for said cam journaled in the handle of the shovel and a button on the upn per end of the, said pin above the said handle ro foroonvenienoe of working by the operators ngers, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two Witnesses.
HENRY WILLIAM CROWTHER. K Witnesses:
JOHN GALE PEDRICK, ARTHUR WILLIAM WEBB.
