To yALL wisten 1T MAY coNennN;
@with tetes strxtt @ffice ISAAC H. SMITH, oF ALBANY', NEW YORK.'
Letters Patent No. 66,051, datei' June 25, 1867,
IMPROVEMENT 1N WRBNGHES.
uiteStigehnle memo td'iu time -Ettetsftteltt mit 'making part nf tte sante;
Beit known that I, ISAAC H. SMITII, of the city and cgunty of Albany, State of N en' York, have invented an improvement in-'Screw-Wrenches, vihereby they maybe more readilyadjnstedto the different sizes of mits to be screwed up; and I dohereby declare that the following is a fell and exact description thereof.` ,l
My screw-wrench is constructed, as' wrenches generally are, with a bar, a fixed jms', and a Inovabie'jaw, together with its adjustingscfew. The adjnstn'g-screw isa heavy screw attached at its ends to and working l e the'movablejaw and the `screw-clip, while its thread Works in a' Vcorresponding thread `made on the jaw side .e bar. One or more' sideslof the adjusting-screw are nirade let or concave, as' may be desirable. When'the ilalcd or concave side is turned down over the bar, the mfovnble jaw can bereadily moved towards the ixed jaw tor a smaller nut, or it can'be shoved back'towards the handle for a large one, and ivhcn the jaws nrc thus set at a. proper distance the adjusting-screw i's turned, the attened or concave sidefmoving out from the bar, and the thread of the screw working `in the thread of the bar holds the movable j aw to its place.
The advantages of thisinvention are, first, 'the wrench can be more readily adapted to the size of the nut` to be worked than the `double'scr'evn'alnl" cann'tfshift' as easily of itself by its working; second, for a' q'nick shifting wrench it is stronger, as the double sere-W is weaker than the large single screw, and tendst-o sti'cn the ber, which it should hug when in work; third, while it can belreadily adapted to any size nut, it has the advantage of the large single adjusting-screw in the tendency to loosen from the not when working the wrench, especially when somewhat worn;
To enable others skilled in the art to make aind use my invention, I Willdescribe it, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, and to thelet-ters of reference marked thereon, the saine letters referring to like parts. Figure 1v is a perspective'view. l i
Figure is an end cross-section of adjusting-screw with lzitted side when s'et for zidjyistment.`
Figure 3 is an end cross-section of same for'worlc. i
Figurel is an endcrossfrsection of'adjusting-scrcw'with concave side set for adjustment.
AFigure is a'crosfseton of the same set for Work. Y
Figure 6 is o. longtiidna'l cross-section set for adjustment.
Figure -7 is a longitndinal cross-section set for work.
A, figs. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, is the ordinaryivrenclbbai, with its fixedjaw B, figs. 1, 6, and-7. C is the movable jaw working on the bar Adige.' 1, 6, and 7, by means ofthe adjusting-screw E, iigs. 1, 2, 13, 4, 5, 16, and rv, the threads c c working in''he`- corresponding threads c c made in the jaw side of the'y bar A. Ono end of the edjust'ingscx'en1 iits'in` andis attached to the movable jaw C,'whilo its other end works in and is attached'to the screw-clip or band D, as in many ordinary wrenches. One or more sides of the adjusting-screw are made ilat, as d and the dotted line a', figs. 2 and 3, or concave, as-a", and the dotted 'line a", igs, 4 end and when Vthe sides either a a a a" are turned down over thc bar A, as in figs. 2, 4, and 6, the movable jaw C can h'e moved to any point in either direction, and hy turning the adjnsting-screiv so :is to bring the ilatted or concave sides ala a amont freni overthc bar A, as in gs. 3, 5, and 7, the movable jaw is set, yet can be tightened or slacked as desired by slightly turning the adjusting-screw in its proper direction., `When the d'djnstin'g-senew rizado with concave sidev or sides a a the barA is made with a convex surface on the jaw sido and cnt'with a proper thread.
What I claim as m'y invention, and desire to secure byl Letters Patent, is-
The adjusting-screw E, 4with ilattcried or concave side or sides a a a a", or their equivalents,`for thc pui'- pose set forth, substantially asjdescribcd.
