Description

UNrrnD STATES` PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD E. SWETT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
LUBRICATORFOR WlNDNlILLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 660.472, dated October 23, 1900.
Application filed AprilSO,1900. Serial No. 141347- (NO mdel-l To all whom, it may concer-7e:
Be it known that I, EDWARD E. SwE'r'r, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city and county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lubricators for Vindmills, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to a new and useful device for lubricating machinery, and is more especially designed for lubricating the various parts of machines or devices located in elevated positions, such as windmills, so as to avoid the danger incident to the operator climbing the structure supporting the elevated machine.
My invention consists of certain details of construction by which a given quantity of the lubricating material will be delivered to the working parts of the machine at each operation of the controlling mechanism, as will hereinafter be fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciiication, Figure l represents a vertical section of the device forming the subject-matter of my invention, showing the valve mechanism in a posiiion to deliver a charge of oil from the lubricator; and'Fig. 2 illustrates an enlarged view of a portion of the valve and valve-chamber in a position to receive a charge of oil from the reservoir of the lubricator.
Referring to the letters of refereii'ce in the drawings, A represents an oil-reservoir, preferably spherical in shape, provided with a supply-pipe a, having a perforated cap a'. The reservoir is provided centrally With a tube B, through which passes a stem C,adapt ed to operate the valves C and C2. The tube B is provided at the bottom with two series of openings b and bthe upper series b forming passages which admit of the passage of the oil from the reservoir to the pipe B and the lower series b forming passages which admit of the passage of the oil from the tube to the chamber D. The chamber D has a conical bottom D and is provided at or near the same with a number of branches d d, which are provided with flexible tubes d d to con- Vey the oil to the parts of the machine to be lubricated. The mechanism for controlling the valves C and C2 consists of a lever E, pivoted at a point e to a bracket F, which latter is firmly secured to the reservoir A. The lever E is connected to the upper part of the stem C by means of a short connected rod G and is operated upon by a spring H, which normally causes the valves C and C2 to assume the position shown in Fig. 1.
In operating the device one end of the lever E is drawn down by means of a long cord or rope l, which causes the lever to move against the action of the spring H and move the valves C and G2 into the position shown in Fig. 2, in which position the oil contained in the reservoir will pass through the openings b b and occupy the space between the valves C/ and C2, the air contained therein escaping through a pipe J into the atmosphere. When the cord or rope I is released, the action of the spring will cause the lever E, valve-stem C, and valves C and G2 to assume the position shown in Fig. l, in which position the oil will pass through the openings b b' into the chamber D and. from there through the branches d CZ and tubes cl' d' to the parts to be lubricated.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
l. A lubricator comprising a reservoir, a tube extending through the same provided with openings arranged respectively .aboveV and below the bottom of the reservoir, a carrier-valve composed of two pistons arranged upon a valve-stem and adapted to control said openings and means as shown for operating the valve.
2. A lubricator comprising a reservoir, a tube extending through the same provided with a series of openings communicating with the reservoir, a carrier-valve composed of two pistons arranged upon a valve stem within said tube, the upper piston 0f which is adapted to control said openings, a second series of openings arranged below the reservoir adapted to be controlled by the lower piston of the valve and means as shown for operating the valve.
3. A lubricator comprising a reservoir, a tube provided with openings arranged above and below the bottom of the reservoir, va chamber communicating with the lower open- IOO ings provided with branches, a carrier-Valve Composed of tWo pistons arranged upon a Valve-stein Within the tube to control the openings and means as shown for operating the valves.
4. Allubrieator comprising in combination a, reservoir, a, tube extending through the same provided with openings arranged above and 'below the bottom of the reservoir, a chamber Communicating With the lower openings, provided with a number of branches, an
escape-pipe communicating with said tube between the openings, a Valve in said tube composed of a pair of pistons, n Valve-stem, and a pivored lever for operating the Valvestem substantially as speciied.
Signed at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, this 16th day of April, 1900.
EDWARD E. SWETT. Witnesses:
