SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 253,404, dated February '7, 1882.
Application filed December 8, 1881.
To all whom ct may concern Be it known that I, LEMUEL MAXFIELD, of Moline, in the county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lubricators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to theletters of reference marked thereon,which form part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a central vertical section, of my invention.
This invention relates to lubricators for steam-engines, steam-pumps,or any machinery whose motive power is steam.
The nature of my invention consists in the combination of. a cylinder, a piston working steam-tighttherein, and provided with a rod which passes through a stuffing-box and has a handle on its upper end, a steam-pipe leading from the boiler into the cylinder beneath said piston, an outlet-pipe leading from the oil-receptacle above the piston to the part which it is desired to lubricate, a feed or supply inlet, and drip-pipes communicating with the cylinder above and below said piston, all being constructed and arranged as will be understood from the following description.

B designates a piston, fitted into the cylinder A and suitably packed, so as to move up anddown therein, steam and oil tight. This piston is provided with a rod, 0, secured centrally to it, and extended through a stuffing-box, a, in the cylinder-head A. On the upper end ofthe said handle is a knob, b. The chamber above the piston is designed for containing oil of any suitable kind, which'is supplied to it through a cup on the upper end of a short upturned pipe, D, provided with a cut-off cock having a hand-wheel, E, on its stem. The space beneath the piston is intended to receive steam; and to supply the steam I employ a pipe, F, provided with a cut-off cock, which pipe leads to the steam-space of the boiler or to the steam-pipe.

This latter pipe is provided with a cut-oii' cock, J, for regulating the flow of the lubricating material. K K designate two pipes, which communicate, one with the oil-space above the piston B and the other with the steam-space below this cylinder. Both of the said pipes are pro vided with cut-off cocks having hand-wheels d d on their stems. The pipes K K communicate with a drip-pipe, L. By these means any oil or water that may be in the cylinder A can be drawn off when refitting the parts. To move the piston down to the-bottom of the cylinder A when it is necessaryto refill the cylinder with oil, I close the cut-oft'cock in the steam-inlet pipe F and open the cock in the lower pipe, K. I then open the cut-ofl' cock in the pipe H, when the steam will rush in above the piston and force it down.
By my invention I am able to feed any kind of oil or tallow uniformly and evenly, and I use the steam to feed thelubricant by direct pressure against the piston instead of by condensation.
I claim as my invention- In a lubricat-or of the upright kind, the combination of the cylinder A, the piston therein provided with a rod extended through the cylinder-head, the steam-supply pipe provided with a cock, the glass gage and oil-outlet pipe H, communicating with the oil-chamber abofi the piston, the pipe H, communicating with the lower end of the pipe H, and provided with a cock and means for allowing the refuse oil and water of condensation to be drawn from said cylinder A, all substantially as described.
