T all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOSEPH HAWKINS and BENJAMIN F. LorTIN, citizens of the United States, residing at Eminence, in the county of Shannon and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Governor Attachments; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to attachments for governors and the primary object of the invention is the provision of means controlled by the engine for controlling the speed of the same.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a steam operated piston which is connected through the medium of a plurality of levers and a rock shaft to the governor valve for controlling the passage of steam from the boiler to the cylinder of a steam engine, which coacts with the action of the governor for regulating the flow of steam into the engine.
)Vith the foregoing and other objects in view this invention consists in such novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters designate like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved governor attachment showing the same applied to a governor, and Fig. 2 is a central sectional view through a governor showing the invention applied thereto.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates a governor valve casing of the ordinary construction which has passages 2 and 3 formed therein. The passage 3 communica-tes with the pipe 6t, which has communication with a boiler (not shown), while the passage 2 extends vertically through the casing 1 and has communication with the steam chest or cylinder of an ordinary type of steam engine (not shown). The communicating openings between the passages 2 and 3 are controlled by a valve structure 5, which is ordinary in the construction of governors. The valve 5 has a rod 6 connected thereto which extends upwardly through the casing 1 and is rotatably seated in a bearing 7 which is formed upon the upper end of the supporting structure 8. The supporting structure 8 is formed integrally with the upper end of the valve casing 1 as is clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The ordinary .type of ball governor 9 is carried by a collar 10 which is mounted upon the upper end of the bearing 7, and the spring 11 thereof bears against the upper enlarged end 12 of the rod 6 for regulating the position of the valve 5 for controlling the quantity of steam passing from the pas sage way 3 into the passage way 2 and through into the engine cylinder (not shown).
The rod 6 has a bevel gear 13 mounted thereon which meshes with a second bevel gear 14. The bevel gear 14 is keyed upon a horizontally extending shaft 15, which is rotatably seated in the bearings 16 formed upon the extension or supporting structure 8. The shaft 15 has a pulley 17 mounted upon its outer end which may have belted communication for operating the governor mechanism.
The casing 1 has a transversely extending opening 20 formed therein below the valve 5, which opening has a pipe 21 seated partially therein and communicating with the lower portion of the passage way 2. The pipe 21 has communication with the vertical pipe 22 through an elbow 23. The pipe 22 enters the lower edge of the casing 24, which casing forms a piston retaining cylinder and has a piston 25 slidably mounted therein. The piston rod 26, which is connected to the piston 25 extends upwardly out of the casing 241- and is loosely connected to an arm 27 which is formed upon a rock shaft 28. The rock shaft 28 is rockably supported by bearings 29 and 30, which are carried by the upper end of the valve casing 1. The rock shaft 28 has an arm 31 connected thereto, which extends transversely therefrom and is connected to the valve stem or rod 6 as is clearly shown at 32 in the drawings.
When the engine (not shown) upon which the governor heretofore described is mounted, is subjected to a heavy load, the heavy pulling of the engine will cause the governor balls 33 and 34 to drop, which will raise the rod 6 and increase the magnitude of the communicating openings between the passage way 3 and the passage way 2 permitting of an increased amount of steam to pass into the engine cylinder. It is a well known fact that in governors such as are commonly used, the opening of the valve structure is not sufficient to accommodate the extra pressure needed upon the engine for the accommodation of the heavy load hauled thereby, such as in sawmill work, and consequently the speed of the engine is decreased. With the improved piston attachment heretofore described attached to the governor mechanism, the steam will pass through the opening and the pipes 21 and 22 into the piston retaining chamber 24. When an increased amount of steam passes into the chamber which is permitted by the increasing of the size of the openings communicating between the passage ways 2 and 3, the piston 25 will be raised or forced upwardly within the casing which will rock the shaft 28 and through the connection of the arm 31 raise the vertical rod 6 and increase the size of the communicating openings between the passage ways 2 and 3 permitting of an augmented amount of steam to enter the steam chest of the engine for maintaining a uniform speed during the pulling of heavy loads upon the engine. 7

What is claimed is 1 1. In a governor mechanism, the combination with a casing, said casing being provided with passageways extending therethrough, and communicating with a boiler and a cylinder, a valve interposed inrsaid casing and controlling the passage of steam through said passage way, a casing communicant with one of said passage ways, a piston slidably seated in said casing, a valve stem connected to said valve, and a plurality of arms connected to said piston and said valve stem for controlling the operation of said valve by the operation of said piston.
2. The combination with a governor structure embodying a casing, said casing being provided with a plurality of passage ways extending therethrough and having communication with a boiler and an engine cylinder, a valve positioned within said casing and controlling the passage of steam through said passage ways, a valve stem connected to said valve, a ball governor mechanism operatively connected to said valve stem, of a cylinder having communication with one of said passage ways, a piston slidably mounted in said cylinder, a rock shaft carried by said casing, a plurality of arms connecting said rock shaft and said piston, an arm connecting said rock shaft and said valve stem for moving said valve stem vertically upon the rocking of said rock shaft by the operation of said piston, said piston being controlled by the quantity of steam flowing through said passage ways. i
