UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLARK F. THAYER, OF JOLIET, ILLINOIS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 660,347, dated October 23, 1900.
Application filed February 28| 1900. b'l'l NOI 6,833. (N0 mOdeL) To al?, whom t may concern:
Be it known thatI, CLARK F. THAYER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Joliet, in the county of Will and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Couches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates particularly to couch-bottoms and to the bottoms of chairs and other similar articles, its object being to provide a light strong support for the cushioningsprings-a su pport that will not stretch and sag, one that is ventilated, and that does not offer lodgment for vermin.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the frame of a couch embodying the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section through the couch on dotted line 2 2 of Fi'g. 1.4 Fig. 3 is a detail in vertical section, showing the manner of attaching to the side rails the transverse strips of the bottom. Fig. 4 is a det-ail plan view also showing said means of attachment.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
In the construction of this couch I provide a supporting-framework A, of the usual form, having the side rails A', the end piece A2, and the bolster A3. Pieces of band-iron of suitable lengths are provided for the transverse strips B and the longitudinal strips C, said strips preferably being interwoven when in position in the framework A. The ends of the transverse strips B are'secured by nails or screws B to the upper edges of the side rails A on opposite sides of the supportingframe A, and staples B2, straddling said strips B, are driven into the side rails A and clenched on the outer sides of said rails. These staples are all in ahorizontal plane, and' strips O cross, an opening D through both of said strips provides a means for securing the usual springsto said bottom. Other means for securing the springs may be employed;
and with similar effect.
I claim as my inventionl. In a bottom for a couch or similar article,in combinatioma supporting-frame; flexible pieces for forming said bottom, which pieces are supported upon the top of the supporting-frame and, extending downward on the inner sides of the frame, are drawn tautv by means for securing them permanently to each of the inner sides of said supportingframe; and said securing means.
2. In a bott-om for a couch or similar arti ele, in combination, a supporting-frame; flexible pieces for forming said bottom, which vpieces are arranged transversely and longitudinally of said couch, the transverse pieces being supported upon the top of the supporting-frame and, extending downward on the inner sides thereof, are drawn taut by means for securing them permanently to each of the inner sides of said supporting-frame; and said securing means.
3. In a bottom for a couch or similar article, in combination, asupporting-frame; iieXible pieces for forming said bottom, which pieces are arranged transversely and longitudinally of said couch, the transverse pieces being secured near their ends upon the top ofthe supporting-frameand, extending downward on the inner sides of the supportingframe, are drawn taut by staples extending through the sides of the supporting-frame; and said staples.
4. In a bottom for a couch or similar article, in combination, asupporting-frame; dexible pieces for forming said bottom, which pieces are arranged transversely and longitudinally of said couch, said longitudinal IOC) pieces being supported upon xed transverse portions 'of said snpportingstrame and, extending,T downward on the inner sides of said transverse portions, are drawn tant by means for securing' them permanently to the inner sides of said transverse portions; and said securing means.
5. In a bottom for a couch or similar artiole, in combination, a supporting-franne;` rnetallic strips for forming said bottom, which strips are arranged transversely and longitudinally of said couch, said transverse strips being secured to the top of the supportingframe and, extending downward on the inner sides of the frame, are drawn taut by staples extending through said side portions, and which longitudinal strips are drawn taut in a similar manner; and said staples.
6. In a bottom for a ooueh or similar artiele, in combination, a supporting-frame; metalle strips for forming said bottom, which strips are arranged transversely and longitudinally of said Couch, said transverse strips being secured near their ends upon the top of the supporting-frame and,extending downward on theinner sides of said supportingframe, are drawn tant by staples extending through said supporting-frame; staples for said transverse strips and means for securing said longitudinal strips in position, said longitudinal and transverse strips beingprovided with coinciding openings at. the crossingpoints of said strips.
