Be it known that I, ELIZABETH M. LESSER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wan ren, in the county of Warren and State of:

Pennsylvania, but temporarily residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening-Eyes for Garments, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to fastening-eyes for garments, and it has particular relation to an eye such as is involved in the class of hookand-eye devices which are used as fastening means upon womens and childrens garments.

In the drawings, Figure l is afront or face view showing my invention in operative po-' sition with relation to the dress fabric. Fig 2 is a rear face view of the matter illustrated. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view in Fig. 1. of the device. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail sectional views of the device in operative position.

Corresponding parts in all figures are de noted by the same numerals of reference.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the improved fastening-eye device, 2 designates the facing or outer fabric of the garment, and 3 designates the inner fabric or lining.

The device is preferably formed of a single piece of wire bent into shape. It comprises a central portion 4, embodying a cross-bar, as at 5, from each end of which extends an arm 6. The arms or side members 6 are curved and upwardly with relation to the cross-bar 5 in a segmental curvature, as represented at '7, the front terminus of said segmental curves terminating at a point in front of the crossbar 5 and on the same plane approximately, there remaining a space or opening, as at 8, between the front terminus of the segmental or curved portion 7 of the arms or side members 6 and the cross-bar 5. In front of the terminus of the segmental or curved portion 7 of the arms or side members 6 the side members are curved or turned downwardly and forwardly, as at 9, thus forming a hump or raised portion projecting upwardly in relation to the plane of the cross-bar 5 and at a point just in front of the latter, said hump or raised portion being designated at 10.

In the practical application or operation of my improved fastening-eye it is adapted to be inserted into position and securely main -tain said position without sewing or the employment of any threads or other supplementary means. To adjust the device into position, it is only necessary to insert the

11 and 12 of the side members or arms 6 inwardly through both the surface fabric 2 and lining 3 of the garment and force said members through both the

2 and 3 until the same rest within the rear part of the rear segmental or curved portion 7. The

11 and 12 are then inserted inwardly again through the lining 3, but not through the surface fabric 2, and are forced through until the lining rests at the front part of the segmental or curved portion 7,

rear-wardly and downwardly and forwardly when the hump or raised portion and insertion ends 11 will be in position between lining 3 and face fabric 2, while the only portion of the device exposed at the face of garment and projecting through the fabric 2 will be the cross-bar 5 and rear part of the segmental or curved portion 7 and the only part of the device exposed at the rear face of the lining 3 will be the bottom or middle part of the segmental or curved portion 7. lhe insertion and operative position and maintenance of the fastening-eye with relation to the face fabric 2 and lining'3 will be readily understood by reference to Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings.

It will be noted that the device 1 will be firmly maintained in operative position when simply inserted in the fabric, as just above mentioned, but that it can be as readily detached, when desired, by simply reversing the insertion movement, and that when in its operative position theinsertion-point portion 11 is safely housed between the face fabric and lining, and any liability of tearing or damage to the garment is thus obviated. WVhen in operative position, accidental dishas a double engagement with the lining, as

indicated at 13 and 14, at the front and rear of the segmental or curved portion 7, and it is necessary to turn and move the device in a plurality of positions before it can be withdrawn from its engagement with the fabric. When the part of the device which projects at the face of the garment and cpmprises the cross-bar 5 is engaged by the hook or similar fastening means, as represented at 15 in Fig. 5, the strain is in a direct plane and is securely and effectively met by the resistance of the fabric in its engaged connections with the side members or arms 6 of the device. The adjacent position of the cross-bar 5 and the humps or raised portions 10, which are intermediately between the rear segmental or curved portions 7 and the front insertion portions 11 provides for the safe retention of the engagement hook or member 15 down within the socket formed by the segmental or curved portion 7 and the cross-bar 5, which engagement is enhanced by the fact that the face fabric 2 will be pinched down in said socket between the cross-bar 5 and the humps or raised portions 10, which are contained between the face fabric and lining.

It will be noted that in the construction of the device as hereinabove described it comprises as its main elements the rear socket, formed by the segmental or curved portions 7 and the cross-bar 5, which socket is only partially exposed at the front or face of the garment, the middle or intermediate humps or raised portions, which project with relation to the mouth of said socket and form the front part of the latter, and the insertion portions or ends, which project forwardly from said intermediate raised portions, the intermediate raised. portions and insertion por tions being inclosed between the face fabric 2 and the lining 3.

By a manifest and simple variation in the curvature of the cross-bar 5 to produce a hook in any adaptedor ordinary form it is obvious that the device will provide a fastening-hook in lieu of a fastening-eye, which hook device can be applied to garments without sewing in the same manner as the eye form of the device, as hereinbefore described, and which will eflectively operate in connection with said herein-described improved eye device or with any usual or ordinary fastening-eye device upon garments.

In the engagement of the rear socket portion of the eye device 1 by a hook device 15 the hook will engage the cross-bar 5 intermediately between the side members b 7 and pinch the fabric down in said socket and between the humps or raised portions 10, as represented in Fig. 5, thus insuring the safe retention of the engagement between the hook and eye.

The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which it appertains and from the foregoing description and explanation. The device is exceedingly simple and is adapted for quick and convenient application, and it is adapted by reason of its im' proved contour or structure to operate with maximum elficiency and effectiveness.

I do not restrict myself to the precise details of construction and arrangement as herein shown and described, as it is manifest that various modifications may be made in the details of structure without departing from the spirit of my invention. I therefore reserve the right to all such variation or modification as properly falls within the scope of my invention and improvements and terms of the following claims. 7

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patcut- 1. An improved fastening device of the class described, comprising a rear socket embodying a cross-bar or engaging member, an intermediate hump or raised portion projecting with relation to the mouth of said socket, and a front insertion portion extending forwardly from said intermediate raised portion, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. An improved fastening device of the class described, comprising a rear socket embodying segmental or curved portions and a cross-bar or engaging member, intermediate humps or raised portions which project with relation to the mouth of said socket and form the front part of the latter, and insertion portions or ends extending forwardly from said intermediate raised portions, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. An improved fastening device of the class described, formed of a single piece of wire bent to provide a rear socket portion em- IIO bodying a cross-bar or engaging means, an intermediate hump or raised portion projecting with relation to the mouth of'said socket portion, and insertion portions or ends extending forwardly from said intermediate raised portion, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

4. An improved fastening device of the class described, formed of a single piece of bent Wire and comprising a socket portion embodying the segmental or curved sides connected at the top-bya cross-bar or engaging member, the upwardly and downwardly curved intermediate humps or raised portions projecting at their apex with relation to the mouth of saidsocket portion, and the insertionportions or ends extended from said curved intermediate raised portions, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

5. An improved fastening device of the class described, comprising a rear socket portion embodying a cross-bar or engaging member from the ends of which project segmental or curved portions forming side members, a middle or intermediate curved portion comprised in said side portions and projecting with relation to the'mouth of saidsocket portion, and a front portion extended from said intermediate portion and forming an inser tion means whereby the device may be inor engaging member from the ends of which extend curved side members which are continued to form a curved or humped interme diate portion projecting with relation to the mouth of said socket portion, the side members being extended from said intermediate portion to form insertion ends, substantially 3 as and for the'purpose set forth.

- 7. The combination, withthe face or outer fabric and the lining of a garment, of a fas-. tening device insertible within said fabrics and comprising a segmental orcurved socket portion embodying a cross-bar or engaging member and curved side members',said curved and the lining, the lining being engaged with said hump or raised portion and the latter being arranged to project with relation to the mouth of the front socket portion, and insertion ends comprised in the side members of the device and extending from the intermediate humped portion andinclosed between the face and lining fabrics.
