REACH CONNECTION FOB VEHICLES.
(Application filed Mar. 7, 1900.)

Q a f UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OSCAR PATZAOK, OF MANDAN, NORTIIDAKOTA.
REACH CONNECTION FOR VEHICLES.
SPECIFICATION formin part of Letters Patent NO. 660,166, dated October 23, 1900.
Application filed March 7, 1900. Serial No. 7 707i (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR PATZAOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mandan, in the county of Morton and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reach Connections for Vehicles; and I do hereby declare the follow ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is designed to strengthen and brace the reach or perch of running-gear for vehicles and at the same time provide rubirons or wear-plates for the hounds. The invention enables light wood, such as pine, being effectively used even where the vehicle is of heavy construction and intended for weighty loads. I
For a full description of the invention an the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for efiecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and the drawings hereto attached.
While the essential and characteristic features of the invention are necessarily susceptible of modification, still the preferred'embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the end portion of a reach, showing it equipped with and strengthened by the means forming the basis of this invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line X X of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of one of the irons.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The reach 1 is of wood (pine or any variety) and is reinforced by companion irons 2 of like construction, one above the other, be-
Y low the'reach and bolted or otherwise rigidly attached thereto by the fastenings The irons arenarrow and of desired length, usually about twenty inches, and the end portions are widened, as shown at 4:, and formed with longitudinal flanges 5 to embrace the sides of the reach and prevent it from splitting. The widened and flanged terminal por tions of the irons unitedly form sectional cuffs which embrace the four sides of the reach. The front ends of the irons are curved to overlap the terminal of the reach, as shown at 6,
and are connected by means of a bolt 7. The
king=bolt 8 passes through the front ends of the irons and reach, and the pulling strain thereon is distributed over the portion of the reach clamped between the irons. Hence the reach can be of pine or other light wood without fear of the king-bolt pulling through. The reach is further prevented from splitting by means of bolts or like fastenings 9 passing transversely therethrough.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. In combination with a reach for vehicles, irons clamped against opposite sides of the reach and having their end portions longitudinally flanged to embrace the sides of the reach and unitedly forming sectional cufis, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a reach for vehicles, irons clamped against opposite sides of the reach and having their end portions widened and longitudinally flanged to embrace the four sides of the reach, and having the front ends inwardly curved to overlap the terminal of the reach and secured together, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OSCAR PATZAOK. [L. s.'] Witnesses: FRANK WILDER, JOHN HANDTMANN.
