Description

(No'Model.)
. W. o, BOYLE.
WAGON RUNNING GEAR.
No. 322,246. Patented July 1.4, 1885` .UY VEJV TOR NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM C. BOYLE, OF ARCOLA, ILLINOIS.
WAGON RUNNiNG-GEAR.
c5i?ECIIEICATION':forming part of Letters Patent No. 322,246, dated July 14, 1885.
Application filed May 20, 1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. BoYLE, aA citizen of the United States, residing at Arcola, in the county of Douglas and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvenients in Wagon Attachments; and I do declare the followlng to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a rear View. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a detail view of my device.
This invention relates to wagon attachments for preventing the king-bolt from breaking; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, all as hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the front axle, B the head-block, and C the bolster, of the runninggear of a wagon. and E the reach of the gear.
To the rear face of the axle I attach a metal plate, F, by bolts F', and this plate I provide with a staple, G, which engages the eye H of a metal bar or strap, H', the other end of D designates the hounds,
(No model.)
which strap is securely bolted to the under face of the reach. To the rear face of the bolster C, I attach a second staple, I, by means of a metal strap, I', which is secured tothe bolster by bolts K K. To this staple I a metal bar or strap, L, is connected by an eye, M, and the other end of the strap L is secured to the upper face of the reach E by the bolts N N, which connect the strap or bar H to the reach.
By this construction the king-bolt is pre vented from breaking under almost all circumstances; but if from any cause the kingbolt should break, the metal straps H and L will prevent the reach from leaving its place, thereby rendering the vehicle absolutely safe in this respect. Y
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent oi" the United States, is-
The combination, with the axle and bolster provided with the attaching-plates and staples, of the reach and the metal straps, having eyes at the front ends, and the bolts connecting the metal straps 'to the reach, substantially as specified. i
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. i
WILLIAM C. BOYLE.
