TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
' Be it known that I, SHEPHERD H. WHEELER, of Dowagiac, inthe county of Cass, and in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Gates; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. I
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, A represents a gate, which may be made in any of the known and nsual waysin its general construction. A represents a platform, which it is not necessary to have, bnt which I may employ. I B and C represent the gate-posts. D represents an upright revolving post, which is placed a little in advanceof and to one side'of the rear post 0. E represents a frame composed of two bars, which are pivoted together at their lower ends, but which are separated at their upper ends, which upper. ends are confined to the extremities of a rocker, a. The convex side of the rocker is placed up, as represented. The post D has a bearing at its bottom, either 'in the platform A, or. its equivalent, and at top in a cross-piece, which lies from it across the-post C. A cleat is secured to the upper bar of the gate, as seen at a: :v. The frame E ispivoted at its lower end to the post D, near its lower end, and the rocker a rests under and against the clcat x x. One of the bars of the gate is a little prolonged at its forward end, so as to enter an opening in the front post B to act as a catch for thegate. The rear of the gate is placed between the two posts O and D, with its cleat resting upon the roller a. To open this gate the operator takes hold of it and pushes it backward until the projection e upon the'top of the gate strikes that marked d on the post D. He
holds up the frontof the gate, while-the rear rides upon the rocker (arising as it moves back. When the two projections meet, he-swings thegate around, the post D at the same time. partially revolving, until it is at or about at rightangles with its normal or shut position. As the rear of the gate is elevated by the frame E with its rocker, when it is being opened, it has of course a downward tendency when the front is lowered, so that it is easily shut. When in a shut position the bottom rail or bar of the gate rests in an opening in a piece placed under it, and it is thus kept steady. 7
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The frame E, with its rocker a, in combination with the revolving post D, as and for the purpose herein specified. I
2. The combination of the frame E with the gate and its posts, and the cleat'rc, or its equivalent, as and for the purpose set forth. v
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have'herennto set my hand this 19th day of March, 1867.
SHEPHERD H. WHEELER.
