IMPROVEMENT IN FURNAGES.
TO ALL WHOM IIT'MAY oouonnir= Be it known that I, CHARLES W. TROTTER, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe, and State of New York, have invented, new and useful-improvements in Hot-Air Furnaces; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. The nature of my invention consists in an improvement in hot-air furnaces, by making the main body A surrounded by triangular-shaped flues, a part of dues to be connected with an inner body or air-chamber, and the remainder of fines are for conducting the smoke and gas around the inner body and to a double radiator above. The whole is so constructed as to give a very large amount of heating surface.
- To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describeits construction and operation.
I construct the main body A, fig. 3; of my furnace of cast iron, with triangular flues b 6 b and 2' M; I also attach flanges h h It on the outside of the main body A. These flanges k h h are cast separate, and'can be attached or detached at will. The triangular flues z' i i it are open on the lower ends and on the outside of fire-pot; the upper ends are connected with the air-chamber or inner bodyifig. 4) at 01 an n n, for the purpose of conducting the air from the outside offire-pot to the inner body or air-chamber, (fig. 4,) where it is quickly heated and rises to the top through a large opening. The triangular flues n n n n "n on inner body (fig. 4) fit close on top of triangular flues of main body A, with openings on inside of air-chamber (fig. 4.) The triangular fines Z2 Z1 (2 are connected with the fire and smoke, and made for the purpose of conducting the heat and smoke around the inner body to the double radiator above, thus giving a great deal of heat from the inner and outer bodies. The flanges h h It being attached on the outside of main body for the purpose of giving more heating surface, I use two tiers of short pipes for conducting the'smoke and gas to the radiator above; one tier of smokepipes on the outside marked 01 d d, and one tier on the inside, e e e, as shown in figs. 1, 2, and 5, for the purpose of giving direct and indirect draught. The radiator (fig. 5) has two channels, one on the outside, and one smaller on the inside, which channels are united by connections at o o, seen in fig. 5. The direct draught and indirect draught are regulated by double dampers k and Z, figs. 5 and 6. To get direct draught, the damper It will have to be closed', aud the damper Z to be opened; this is all done at once, as both dampers are connected to one rod m. By closing the damper 7c, the damper I will open, thus giving direct draught, and, by closing damper Z, damper k is opened, in this the smoke will have to pass from the outside channel to the inside channel to the smoke pipefin rearg'as shown in fig. 5. A. great amount of heat is given by this double radiator. The red arrows representth'epa'ssage of air, and the black arrows represent the smoke and gas.
What I claim as my'invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'- 1. I claisn the peculiar construction of the main body A, in connectionwith inner body a, with triangular fines n u n n n, all-in the manner and for the purpose herein deseribedl 2. I claim a double radiator, G, connections 0 o, and double damper 7c andl, with rod 021, also two tiers of smoke pipes d d d and e e 0, all in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
