HENRY I-I. MERCER, OF CLAREMONT, NEW HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNOR TO THE SULLIVAN MACHINERY COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE AND CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CUTTING-CHAIN FOR MINING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters recent No. 659,348, dated October 9, 1900. I
i Application filed March 9, 1899. serial No. 708,351. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: of sections 1) b secured together by rivets Be it known that I, HENRY H. MERCER, a or in any other suitable manner. resident of Claremont, in the county of Sul- The sections 1) b have seats d formed on livan and State of New Hampshire, have intheir inner contiguous faces which coincide vented a new and useful Improvement in with each other, so as to receive the links of Cutter-Chains for Mining-Machines; audI do the chain.' As shown in Fig. 2, the central hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, link at is held between the sections 19' b of and exactdescription thereof. the block b, as well as the adjoining ends of My invention relates to cutter-chains to be the links a a said links fitting in said seats [0 used in connection withmining-machines. cl. As the chain is continuous through the The object of my invention is to adapt an block and only a small portion of the metal ordinary cablechain composed 0t welded is cut away to receive the links of the chain links for use in connection with mining-mathe strain does not come 011 the rivets 0, but chines by arranging the cutters thereon in only on the links ofthe chain. The rivets c 15 such a manner as to provide a strong and onlyact to hold the blocks on the chain. By durable cutter-chain. this construction the blocks maybe removed To this end my invention comprises, genwithout disconnecting the links of the chain erally stated, an ordinary cable-chain with in case it is desired to remove a broken or cutters arranged thereon and means for reworn out block and replace it by a new one.

the block at about its center or adjacent thereto, so as to break down and carry out the coal which remains after the outside cutterssuch as shown in Figs. 8, 9, and 10-- The letter designates a cable-chain of any suitable construction, the adjacent links 70 70 of said chain being connected to the cutter-block m, which is interposed between said links. This cutter-block is formed of a solid piece of metal, and said block has the seats 91. at each end thereof adapted to receive the ends of the links 7c k Rivets 0 pass down through openings in said block and through the said links and act to secure the block on firmly to the links 70 k The block m is also provided with one or more seats or recesses q, within which the tailpieces r of the cutters r fit. A pin s,with niches 3 formed therein, passes down through said block m, said niches coinciding with the niches t in the cutters 9 when said pin is inserted. By turning the pin the cutters are firmly secured within the seats q. The pins has a head on one end and the other end is riveted, as at 8 A springwasher s is interposed between the portion 8 and the block, so as to prevent said pin from turning or working loose. This manner of securing the cutters in place, however, forms no part of my invention, but is part of an invention of' J. L. Mitchell, for which he filed an application for patent on the 7th day of March, 1899, Serial No. 708,084.
In Figs. 8, 9, and 10 the cutter-block is adapted to support cutters on its outer faces. These blocks a are also formed of a solid piece of metal, with seats a formed therein to receive the links 70 70 Rivets o secure the links to the blocks u.
Formed in the outer faces of the block to are the dovetailed seats 10, adapted to receive the cutters as. These cutters are held in the seats 10 by means of the bolts 3 which pass through the block to, the inner ends of said bolts having the hooked portions y, adapted to engage the cutters w on one side, so that when the nuts g on said bolts are tightened the cutters are clamped rigidly within their seats, the same as above.
By my invention I provide a very simple and economical form of cutter chain, one which will be strong and durable and in which the cutter-blocks can be arranged at suitable intervals on an ordinary cable-chain, so that they may be easily removed and others substituted therefor, as may be desired.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a chain-cutter for mining-machines, a cable-chain composed of Welded links, a block on said chain, and a cutter carried by said block, substantially as set forth.
2. In a chain-cutter for mining-machines, a cable-chain composed of welded links, a block engaging said chain and detachably secured thereto, and a cutter carried by said block, substantially as set forth.
3. In a chain-cutter for mining-machines, an endless cable-chain composed of welded links, a sectional block engaging the links of said chain and secured thereto, and a cutter carried by said block, substantially as set forth.
4. In a chain-cutter for mining-machines, an endless cable-chain composed of welded links, a block composed of sections having seats on their contiguous faces conforming to the links and adapted to receive the same and secured thereto, and a cutter carried by said block, substantially as set forth.
5. In a chain-cutter for mining-machines, an endless cable-chain composed of welded links, a block composed of sections adapted to engage the links of said chain and secured thereon, and a cutter extending out from each of said sections, substantially as set forth.
6. In a chain-cutter for mining-machines, an endless cable-chain composed of welded links, a block composed of sections adapted to engage the links of said chain and secured thereon, said sections having seats formed in their outer surfaces, and cutters fitting in said seats, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I, the said HENRY II. MERCER, have hereunto set my hand.
HENRY H. MERCER.
