Description

May 25 1926.
M. P. HOLMES MINING MACHINE Filed 001;. 19, 1921 Patented May 25, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MORRIS I. HOLMES, OF CLAREMONT, NEW HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNOR TO SULLIVAN MACHINERY COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
MINING MACHINE.
Application filed October 19, 1921. Serial No. 508,792.
My invention relates to mining machines.
it has for its object to provide an im proved cutter bar for such machines and more especially to provide an improved cut- (or bar of such great strength that sulphur or the like entering between the chain and gibs may not pry the bar apart or, as sometimes occurs, open up the bar to such an extent as to cause the cutter chain to run out.
In the accompanying drawings 1 have shown for purposes of illustration one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice.
In these drawings,-
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a mining machine equipped with this form of my improvement. 1
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1. Y
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal partial sectional view of the structure shown in Fig. 2.
In this form of my invention, it will be noted that I have shown a bar of a usual outline including longitudinally extending members 1, preferably bridged by suitable transverse members 2, herein above and below the same, and having gib members 3 rigidly connected on opposite sides of the protruding edge of each longitudinally extending member 1, as by means of rivets 4-. As in a usual construction these gibs 3 cooperate to provide a chain passage 5 in which a cutter chain 6 moves around the bar. l i l In my improved construction it will be observed that I have provided interlocking means between the gibs 3 and the bar members 1, the same herein including substan tially L-shaped interlocking members 7 one arm of each of which is disposed in a suit able longitudinally disposed and transverse ly extending slot 8 in the member 1, while the other arm of each is provided with an inturned portion 9 seated in a correspondingly shaped slot in the inner Wall of a longitudinal slot 10 in the gib 3, the cutter chain 6 running between the gibs and as in usual construction having a portion running in each slot 10 and through engagement with the walls thereof preventing lateral separation of the chain from the bar.
As a result of my improved construction, it will be observed that it is possible to interlock the gibs 3 against separation and to 5 utilize a chain 6 of standard construction and cross section without any changes in the chain itself, it only being necessary to provide the members 7 and slot the gibs and members 1 to receive the same. Attention is also directed to the fact that the interlocking members form additional bearing surfaces for the chain, which are replaceable when desired.
While I have in this application specifically described one form which my invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that this form of the same is shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A cutter bar including a gib rigidly connected thereto and forming a cutter chain guide, means operating to hold said gib rigidly connected to said bar, and supplemental means for interlocking said gib and said bar having portions respectively interlocking with said gib and with said bar.
2. A cutter bar including gibs rigidly connected thereto and cooperating to form a cutter chain guide, means operating to connect said gibs rigidly to said bar, and supplemental means having parallel ribs interloeking with said gibs and with said bar.
3. A cutter bar including longitudinally slotted gibs rigidly connected thereto and cooperating to form a cutter chain guide, and supplemental holding means extending into the slots therein and interlocking with said gibs and bar.
l. A cutter bar including gibs rigidly connected thereto and cooperating to form a cutter chain guide, means cooperating with both gibs and said bar to connect the same rigidly together, and a plurality oi supplemental means each interlocking with a single gib and with said bar to prevent separation of said gibs.
5. A cutter bar coupling including gibs rigidly connected thereto and cooperating to form a cutter chain guide, and supplemental means including a plurality of locking members each having a laterally extending portion engaging a gib and a cooperating parallel portion engaging said bar.

8. A. cutter bar including gibs rigidly connected thereto and cooperating to form a cutter chain guide, and a plurality of members each having a laterally extending portion interlocking with gibs and a cooperating portion interlocking with said bar.
9. A cutter bar including gibs and spaciug members therefor, and means carried by said spacing members having lateral portions and interlocking with said spacing members and with said gibs to prevent separntion of the latter.
10. A cutter bar including gibs rigidly connected thereto and cooperating to form a cutter chain guide, and supplemental means for interlocking with said gibs and with said bar adapted to provide a bearing surface for said chain.
11. A cutter bar including parallel gibs and a spacing member interposed between said gibs, mean for rigidly connecting said gibs with said spacing member and supplemental means for connecting said gibs and spacing member including a member having angular portions interlocking with each of the same.
12. A cutter bar including spaced gibs, means for rigidly connecting said gibs to said bar, and supplemental means for interlocking with said gibs and said bar, said supplementalmeans being positioned by said first mentioned means.
13. A cutter bar having gibs and a grooved spacing member therefor, means for connecting said gibs and said member together and supplemental means having apertures formed therein interlocking with said gibs and extending into the groove in said spacing member, said first mentioned means passing through said apertures in said SUPPlGIDQDtfll means.
14-. A cutter bar including a grooved gib and a grooved spacing member, and means cooperating with the grooves in said gib and spacing member respectively for interlocking the same together.
15. A cutter bar including grooved gibs and a grooved spacing member therefor, and means having lateral parallel portions cooperating with the grooves in said gibs and said spacing member respectively for interlocking the same together.
16. A cutter bar including grooved gibs and a grooved spacing member therein forming a cutter guide. and a pair of longitudinally disposed members each interlocking with a gib and with said spacing member adapted to provide a bearing for a cutter chain movable in said guide.
