GLOWER-HEATING APPARATUS FOR ELECTRIC LAMPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 659,268, dated October 9, 1900.

Be it known that we, JOHN VAN VLEOK and WILLIAM N. STEVENS, of the city of New York, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Glower-Heating Apparatus for Electric Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to that type of electric lamps in which there is a glower normally non-conducting, but which becomes conducting and caused to glow upon being raised to a certain temperature.
Our invention consists more particularly in the combination, with an electric lamp of the type aforesaid having a glower, of a removable flame-producing burner for heating said glower, and means for guiding said burner into definite operative position with respect to said glower, together with the various combinations hereinafter more particularly pointed out.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows the lamp with the guard device in section and the heating-lamp applied thereto. Fig. 2 shows a modification in which a guard device formed of bars is employed instead of a glass globe, as represented in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows the heating-lamp separately. Fig. 4c is atop View of the supporting-ringF ofFig. 1.

A is the cylindrical support for the glower B, which is secured on the lower face 0 of said support. At D are circuit-wires whereby current is conducted to the glower B. The support A is provided with a flange or collar at E, which receives the curved-over ring F. In the arched upper side of this ring, as
shown in Fig. 4, are numerous openings Gr.
Secured to the outer side of the ring F is any suitable holding contrivance, such as clips H, which receive and hold the upper flanged portion of the glass guard-globe I. Between the flange of the globe I and the clips H is preferably interposed a gasket J, of asbestos or similar material. In the lower part of the guard-globe I is an opening K.
The heating device may be in the form of a lamp L, adapted to burn alcohol or other spirit, which will produce a substantiallysmokeless flame and the reservoir of which Serial No. 14,522. (No model.)
is supported in a universal joint, such as gimbals M, in a fork N upon a suitable rod or handle 0. Surrounding the lamp-burner P and secured upon it is a ring Q, provided with air-openings and with upwardly and outwardly inclined arms or fingers R.
In the modification shown in Fig. 2 the spring-clips H and globe I are omitted, and in lieu thereof four metal bars S are secured to the periphery of the ring F and extend downwardly and are united at their lower ends to a ring T. These bars are outwardly curved, as shown.
In using this device the lamp is applied as shown in Fig. 1, so that the arms R receive the globe or guard bars, and thus the burner is guided and centered directly under the glower, the flame passing upward through the opening K.
The relation and sizes of the several parts are to be such that when the lamp is placed in position and centered, as described, the flame will reach the glower to heat it. In the construction shown in Fig. 1 the draft passes in through the openings in the ring Q and escapes through the openings G of the ring F.
It will be seen that our device provides for the proper placing of the heating-flame with respect to the glower to heat the latter, while preventing any danger of the lamp-burner striking or coming in contact with the glower. The lower surface 0 of the glower-support, which is directly above the glower, is made of refractory material, so as not to be injured by the heat of the flame and also to receive the direct impact of the flame or hot air, and thus to protect the support above. The periphery of this refractory surface is made inclined, substantially as shown, so that it may act as a deflecting-surface to direct the upward hotair current into the annular passage which surrounds the support A and which is formed by the sleeve produced by the ring F and globe I. From this annular passage the hot air escapes by the openings G in ring F. This passage thus acts like a chimney, increasing the draft on the flame and facilitating its action upon the glower.
We claim 1. The combination with an electric lamp of the type herein specified having a fixed glower and a surrounding guard therefor provided with an opening below said glower, of a removable flame-producing burner forheatin'g said glower and means for centering said burner with respect to said opening, substantially as described.
2. The combination with an electric lamp of the type herein specified having a glower and a substantially-globular guard device surrounding said glower and provided with an opening below the same, of a removable flame producing burner for heating said glower provided with a guide adapted to fit upon said guard device and to center said burner with respect to said opening, substantially as described.
3. The combination with an electric lamp of the type herein specified, having a glower and a translucent globe surrounding said glower and provided with an opening below the same, of a removable flame-producing burner for heating said glower provided with a guide adapted to fit upon said guard device and to center said burner with respect to said opening, substantially as described.
4. In an electric lamp of the type herein specified, a glower, a support below which the glower is secured, a heater below said glower, an inclosing globe for said glower carried by said support, and means for sustaining said globe from a point on said support at a distance above said glower, whereby an annular passage for the escape of hot air is provided around said support, substantially as described.
5. In an electric lamp of the type herein specified, a glower, a cylindrical support therefor, the arched or bent-over ringF upon said support provided with openings G and secured upon said ring the globe L having an opening K, and inclosing said glower, substantially as described.
6. In an electric lamp of the type herein specified, a glower, a support therefor, a fixed sleeve surrounding said glower and a portion of said support and open to the atmosphere at top and bottom and a deflecting-surface immediately above said glower; whereby a heating-flame introduced at the bottom of said sleeve will impinge upon said glower and said deflecting-surface and thereafter pass off through the annular space between said sleeve and said support, substantially as described.
