SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 658,392, dated September 25, 1900.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, J osnrn EDWARD PAT- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Camden, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tongs for Cleaning Drains or the Like, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improved device for cleaning drains, sewers, and the like, and has for its object to so construct the same that it may be cheaply manufactured and easily operated.

In the drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which like symbols of reference represent corresponding parts, the figure is a longitudinal sectional view of the device.

1 represents a tube in which operates a rod or plunger 2, and 3 and 4: are nuts which are screwed upon the tube 1, the purpose of the same being to secure or hold a plunger 5, of leather or rubber, for plunging and assisting in cleaning the drain.

6 is a yoke secured upon the tube 1, said yoke having bolts 7 7 on the ends of its arms, and 8 represents serrated jaws formed with inwardly-inclined ends to facilitate insertion in the drain and also for clamping the material to be removed. The jaws 8 are formed with outwardly extending arms 9, formed with slots 10, within which the bolts 7 fit and are adapted to work. 11 is a bolt forming a pivot upon which the jaws 8 work and are contracted and expanded.

12 is a nut on the end of the rod 2, the purpose of the same being to screw down against the outer end of tube 1 and lock the jaws 8 when they are in their closed or operative position.

The operation of the device is as follows: The tongs being grasped at their outer end by the hand of the operator are inserted in the drain, the material is clamped between the jaws, and the nut 12 is screwed down against the tube 1, thus securely clamping and holding the material until it is withdrawn, and at the same time the plunger 5 facilitates the cleaning operation.

Havingnow fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a device of the character described, the combination with the outer tube, of a rod operating within the same, a yoke connected with the outer tube, angular jaws, connections between the angular jaws and the yoke, and a nut on the rod adapted to lock the jaws when operated, substantially as described.

2. A device of the character described, comprising the outer tube, a rod operating within the same, a yoke connected with the outer tube, angular jaws, connections between the angular jaws and the yoke, a nut on the rod adapted to lock the jaws when operated, and a plunger connected with the outer tube to facilitate the cleaning operation,substantially as described.
