SAMUEL W. KAPLAN, OF MOKEESPORT, PENNSYLVANIA. V
YTOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 658,182, dated September 18, 1906.
Application filed May 28,1900.
.To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, SAMUEL W. KAPLAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mc- Keesport, in. the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive toy for the amusementof children; and it consists in the novel features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of the toy, the figure-concealing shutters being shown open in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-sectional view with the shutters open. Fig. 3 is a plan view with the shutters shown open in full lines and closed in dotted lines.
Referring to the drawings, 2 is a box or case preferably triangular in cross-section, with the top ridge 3 thereof interrupted by a transverse opening adapted to be closed by the oppositely-swinging shutters 4, the latter being hinged at their lower edges to the opposite sides of case 2. When closed, the upper ends of the shutters bear against each other and form a continuation of ridge 3 and are held normally in this position by elastic bands 5, secured at the ends to the case and between the ends traversing the shutters near their upper ends and secured thereto. Stops 6,pro jecting from the case sides, prevent the shutters from opening too far and form guides for operating-strings 7 the latter being secured at their upper ends and passingdownward over said stops and through the case interior and bottom and united to form the single operating-cord 8. A shelf 9 is arranged within. the case at or below the transverse opening and supports a ligure 10 of any desiredform, which is normally hidden from view by the shutters, but which may be exposed momentarily or longer by a pull upon cord 8, the case being held in one hand and the cord drawn upon by the other, as will be understood. As
Serial No. 18,198. (No model.)
soon as the pull is relaxed the shutters are closed by the elastic Vbands kand the figure isl clearly exposed to View and considerable amusement may be aorded by rapid manip ulation of the cord.
The shape or contour of the case is not essential to my invention, though the best results are had when the incision is made in an angle or ridge thereof, nor do I conne myself to the elastic bands as a means for closing the shutters.A
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An improved toy comprising a case formed with a longitudinal ridge, the sides of the case having complementary openings intersecting the ridge, shutters hinged at their lower ends and adapted to bear against each other at the upper ends and form a continuation of the ridge, springs for holding the shute ters normally closed, actuating-strings, and a gure supported within the case and in line with the shutter-closed openings, substantially as shown and described.
2. An, improved toy comprising a case formed with a longitudinal ridge, the sides of the case formed'with complementary open-` ings intersecting the ridge, shutters hinged at their lower ends and adapted to bear against each other at the upperends and form acontinuation of the ridge, the elastic bands for holding the shutters normally closed, the stops for limiting the movement of the shutters, the
actuating-cords, the shelf within the case, and a figure on the shelf, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have Vhereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Wit;-
SAMUEL W. KAPLAN.
