W Y i I forg ys I NITED STATES PATENT OF I JAMES WILY GOODING, 0F FLAT CREEK, lynssouai.
DOUBLE-:SHQVEL CULTlVATOR-P UOW.
SPECIFICiACLION forming part of Letters Patent No. 658,146, dated September 18, 1900.
Application filed J ly-13, 1900. Serial No. 23.520. (No model.)
To rtZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES WILY Goon- ING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Flat Creek, in the county of Barry and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Double-Shovel Cultivator-Plow, of which the" following is a specification.
My invention is an improved double-shovel cultivator-plow, the object of my invention being to eifect improvements in the construction of the plow, whereby the beams are flexibly connected together and adapted to be raised and lowered independently of each other when the plow is in operation to avoid stumps, stones, roots, or other obstructions, and whereby the cultivating-shovels may be inclined laterally in either direction tofacilitate the guiding of the plow and to enable the same to be used on hillsides and uneven ground.
My invention consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices hereinafter fully set forth, and point-ed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a double-shovel cultivator-plow constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same, taken on a plane near the rear end of the beams and looking forward. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the connectingpiece to which the front ends of the beams are pivoted. Fig. 4 is a detail elevation of the front portion of my improved double-shovel cultivator-plow.
. The plow-beams 1, which are of the usual construction, have their front ends pivotally attached to opposite sides of a connectingpiece 2 by a bolt 3. Hence the said beams 1 are adapted to be moved in vertical planes independently of each other when the plow is in operation, to raise or lower their respective cultivatingshovels 4 as the same may be required to clear an obstruction. It will The connecting-piece 2 is preferably provided at its front end with a hook 5 or a suitable clevis adapted for the attachment of a singletree. The rear end of the said connecting-piece is provided above and below the beams 1 with laterally-extending lugs 6, which limit the play of the beams independently of each other.
A handle-lever 7 isattached to each of the beams 1 and supported at an appropriate angle by a brace 8. The said handle-levers are not connected togethera d the same are used in the usual manner to direct and manage the plow and to raise and lower the rear ends of the plow-beams independently of each other, as may be required.
To the inner side of each beam 1, near the rear end thereof, is secured a vertical plate 9 by means of suitable clip-bolts 10. Other suitable means may, if preferred, be em ployed in lieu of the clip-bolts to secure said plates to said beams. The said plates 9 are provided at their upper and lower ends with inwardly-extending pairs of ears 11. Links 12 connect the upper andlower ends of the respective plates 9, the ends of the said links being secured between the cars 11 on pivotal bolts 13. The said plates and links flexibly connect the rear portions of the beams 1 together to admit of the independent movement of the said beams. It will be understood that the plates 9 are at all times parallel with each other and that the same, in connection with the links 12 and the connectin g-plece to which the front ends of the beams are pivotally attached, adapt the plow or shovels to be tilted or inclined laterally in either direction, as may be required to compensate for the slope or inequalities of the field. Furthermore, by thus tilting or inclining the plows laterally the same may be readily guided in the rows with little or no exertion on the part of the plowman.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In a double-shovel cultivator-plow, the combination of the beams pivotally connected together at their front ends and each provided with a lever-ban d1e,vertically-disposed plates secured to the said plow-beams, near the rear ends thereof, and links having their ends pivotally connected to the upper and 10 play of said beams, and flexible connections between the said beams near the rear ends thereof, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
JAMES WILY GOODING.
