Description

W. SIMS.
DOOR AND BIT FOR BOILING 0R PUDDLING FURNACES.
Patented June 11,1867

WILLIAM SIMS, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
' Letters Patent No. 65,773, dated June 11, 1867.
til ficlgtbule tttemh tn in time Enters fiutmtant muting mm at the 581112.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I,LWILLIAM Sum, of No.'774 Penn street, in the city of Pittsburg, county of Allegheny, and State-of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and. iurproved Doorand Bit for Puddling or Boiling Furnaces, or all other furnaces subject to extreme heat; andI do hereby declare that the following isa full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and tothe letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 is an inside view of my improved door and newbit.
Figure 2 is a view of'the bottom of the same. v
Figure 3 is a vertical central section through the section line A B of Hg. 1, and
Figure 4 is a section through the'section line E D of fig. 1.
Similar letters of refcrence'indicate like parts.
F is my improved door, which is filled with the fire-brick G G, four of which are removed to show my new hit and the manner of securing the some to the door. H is my bit, boring the Wings 0 C and the flanges J J, which are connected to the wings by the brackets K K. The bit is securely fastened to.the door by the bolts L L; which pass through the door and are fastened either by a nutor key. The ledges M Men the bottom of the door secure the flanges J J and s'upportthe bit, preventing all vibratory motion and relieving the bolts L L of the'wcight of the bit.- i v 1 The nature of my invention consists in the peculiar formation of the door and bit, as follows: Thew'ings of the bit, markedC C m the drawing, with brackets on each side acting as supports or stays to the wings", are intended to be, and they are, a protection to the door from the action of the fire in the furnace, the wings, as noted above taking the place of that portion pfthe door which is alwn'ys destroyed by the 'action of the fire, and'thus rendering the whole door useless, whereas under this improvement the door is saved and the bit only destroyed. That from the peculiar construction of the bit, which formsthe mouth of the door, and can be readily detached, and'the filling in with fire-brick or other substances between the sides of the door and the bit, the door ,will stand the same intensity of heat which is common to the ordinary furnace dooi' at the present time for amuch longer period, and when injured or destroyed by the fire orany other cause can be easily taken out and replaced by a new hit, without casting aside the whole door as heretofore, thereby saving in time and expense. Y The door with this improvement-would last an indefinite 'length of time, while the door in use at present would be destroyed in a, few weeks used in the same Way, This improvement in a will of twenty furnaces, it is believed, would save more than $1,000 per annum in the cost of doors alone, besides the economy of time and the destruction of brick or other substance used for lining or filling the inside of the door.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1/ An improved door and a new bitto be fastened thereon for paddling or boiling furnaces, or all other furnaces subjectedto intense heat.
WILLIAM SIMS.
