Description

Patented Sept. 4, |900. R. H. LEWIS.
No. 657,27t.
B U T T 0 N (Application mea may a1, 1990;)
(Ho Model.)
inn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RUSSELL II. LEWIS, OFIPROVIDENOE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR- TO THE S. da B. LEDERER COMPANY, OF RHODE ISLAND.
BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 657,271, dated September 4, 1900.
Application filed May 31, 1900. Serial No. 18,516. (No model.)
To tZZ 1071/0717/ it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUSSELL I-I. LEWIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a certain new and useful Improvementin Buttons, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to the ordinary forms of collar-buttons, pointers, and studs consisting` of either fixed or lever heads.
My purpose is to produce a button of the above class which may be easily inserted or removed, also to insure against the accidental detachment of the button from the fabric under any and all circumstances.
I effect my purpose by means of a button having a fixed lateral extension intermediate the head and shoe.
In detail the construction is shown with reference to the drawings, wherein- Figure l is a perspective view of a lever button or pointer embodying my invention; Iiig. 2, a vertical section of the same on line ma; of Eig. l. Figs. 3 and 4 are plan and side views, respectively,of the retaining-disk; and Fig. shows my invention embodied in a button having a fixed head.
Similar letters re fer to similar parts throughout the views. Y
'lhe construction begins with the tubular post member, which is formed with an annular shoulder h intermediate its upper section b" and the lower section h. A disk O is next placed upon the post seated on the shoulder b. In detail this disk is shown in Fig. 3 cut nearly semicircular in form With projecting tongues c, one of which is upwardly and the other downwardly inclined, together with a central post-opening c. After application of the disk a metal plug d is forced into the post to expand the walls into close and fixed contact with the disk O. The cover or shoe I3 is next secured by suitable dies, after which the buttonhead A is applied in the usual manuel', thus completing the button.
From the above description the application and advantage of my invention are obvious. To unite the two pieces of fabric ff, the button-head A is first passed through the buttonholes and a positive twist of the button-shoe engages the upwardly-directed disk-lip with the hole and guides, by a spiral movement, the entire disk to a position intermediate both pieces of fabric. Removal is effected by rotation of the button in the opposite direction, which engages the downwardly-directed disk-lip with the buttonhole.
The use of my button not only furnishes a guide for insertion and removal, but prevents the accidental detachment of the button when engaged with only one of the two pieces of fabric which are to be united. This is particularly true when the buttonhole is so worn as to allow the button-head to naturally slip therethrough.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. As an improved article of manufacture, a button provided with a tubular posi having an annular shoulder at its exterior and intermediate its ends, a disk surrounding` said post and seated upon said shoulder, said disk being provided with oppositely projecting tongues, and means arranged in said tubular post and adapted to expand the latter for securing the disk upon said shoulder.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a button provided with a tubular post having an annular shoulder at its exterior and intermediate its ends, adisksurroundingsaid post and seated upon said shoulder, said disk being provided with oppositely-projecting tongues, and a plug arranged in said'tubular post and adapted to expand the latter for securing the disk upon said shoulder.
In testiin ony whereof I have aiii xed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
RUSSELL II. LE WlS.
