IMPROVEMENT IN GORN-PLOUGHS.
Lllgt Stimuli tun-tn to in flgrsc girttu's adilitlli mm mating part at flge smut.
TO ALL WHOM IT -MAY CONCERN: I
Be it known that I, JOHN M. CLARK, of Somervillo, in Butler county, in the State of Ohio, have'invented a new and useful Improvement in Corn-Ploughs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked.
thereon.
Figure 1 represents my improved plough complete. J
Figure 2 represents the plough adjusted as a gang-plough.
Figure 3 represents the metal portion of the plough.
Figure 4 is a portion of the beam and its attachments.
Figure 5 is the ratchet and latch for adjusting the draw-bars.
In the accompanying drawings, A. A denote the standards, connected together by the adjustable crossbraces 13 B, by means of bolts [1 a a a. On the inner sides of the standards there brackets or staples b 6, through which the handles 0 C project; and (Z d indicate series of holes in the standards for the purpose of adjusting the braces B B for varying the position of the plough and the beam D. The beam D is connected with the braces B B by means of a bolt, 0, and nut, a washer,f, being interposed between the braces, as represented. The handles C C are connected with the beam by straps of iron and bolts g, which serve as hinges, allowing the handles to be adjusted laterally when the ploughs are adjusted towards or from each other. A rod, it, passes through the beam D and handles 0 C, which aids the hinges at g in keeping the beam D in proper position. Fig. 5 represents a ratchet and latch, to be connected with the lower front portion of the beam, and serves to fasten the adjustable draw-bars iiin lifi'erent positions to correspond with the several adjustments of the braces B B, beam D, and standards A A. These draw-bars connect with the standards near-the plonghs, by means of fixed hooks and loops in the bars 2' z. The latch is so hinged as to be removed in the are of a circle out from its place under the beam D, which will admit of the adjustment of the link j, which rests upon the ratchet and is connected withthe draw-bars. The front end of the beam is provided with the upright bars a a, perforated with holes, through which a wooden pin can be inserted to hold the tongue k at any desired elevation. The rearcnd of the tongue has an iron strap secured" upon it, seen at l, with a hole extending through it, by
which meahs it is connected with the end of the beam, which has a suitable detent extending up sutficiently'for.
the purpose. Connected with the detent 222 there is a bent metal guard, 0, under the end of which the tongue extends, when the detent is entered in the hole through the end of the tongue. The object of this construction is to form a substantial fastening for the tongue to draw the plough by, but which will, in the eveiit that the ploughs are obstructed by an obstacle which would strain or break them, cause the wooden pin n to break and wholly detach the team, with the tongue and double-trees, from the plough.
The plough proper is constructed of a single sheet of metal, represented in fig. 3, and the circular portion is bent up to form a cutter and protector, as indicated in the drawings.
In fig. 1 the plouglis are adjusted for ploughing corn, by causing one of the ploughs to run on each side of the corn rows, or between the rows; and in fig. 2 the ploughs are adjusted so thatv theright-hand plough is in rear of the other, and by substituting a left-hand plough for the right-hand plough P, in fig. 2, the plough at P would turn the earth into the furrow of the plough P, like a gang-plough. In adjusting the ploughs as represented in fig. 2, the longest drag-bar 2' would be connected with the standard of plough P, and the short bar or rod 2' with the standard of plough P, and the latch over the ratchet (fig. 5) would be removed, and the link j adjusted into a proper notch to cause the rods or drag-burst 2' to perform their functions of bracing the plough standards A A, and strengthening the whole structure. In adjusting the ploughs to the position seen at fig. 2, the braces 13 B are changed into the adjustment represented in this figure, and the two thick washers y yare inserted on the bolts, between the standards and the cross-braces B B, near the top of the standards.
Having fully described my improvements in cornploughs what I claim therein as of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1, The adjustablecross-braces 1313, connected with the rear cud of the beam D, in combination with the standards A A, constructed, arranged, and operating conjointly in'the manner and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the ratchet and latch represented infig. 5, with the adjustable link j and drew-bai s 'i 2', arranged in the manner and for the purpose described.
3. The guard o and detent m, in combination with the tongue in, bars :1, operating substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. The construction of the ploughs of a. single sheet of met-o1 in the mannr represented in fig. 3, for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 7th day of February, 1857.
JOHN M. CLARK.
