SEECFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 657,008, dated August 28, 1900.
Application filed March 29, 1900. Serial No. 10,664. (No model.)

Be it known that we, EZARIAH RIsTER and WILLIAM A. WOOD, citizens of the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Gallatin and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Churns; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to churns of the class designed to be run by clock mechanism, the driven shaft of which is connected with an eccentric disk, the pin of which engages the dasher-rod of the churn and reciprocates it vertically within the churn-hodyto agitate the cream and produce the butter.
To these ends the invention consists in the construct-ion and novel combination of the parts of the dasher-operating mechanism, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation, a portion being broken away, showing the disk on the end of the driven shaft of the operating mechanism, said disk being provided with a wrist-pin to engage the eccentric yoke on a vertically-sliding pitman-rod workin g in a vertically slotted adjustable guide-frame secured to the front wall of the casing for the clock mechanism, with said eccentric yoke in engagement with said wristpin on the disk of said driven shaft. Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the pitman and the arm for connecting the churn-dasher rod therewith, and Fig. 3 is a sectional detail view showing the controlling-lever and its notched adjusting-rack for holding said lever in place to regulate the speed of the driving mechanism as applied to the pitman-rod to either increase or diminish the strokes of the pitman-rod and accordingly the strokes of the churn-dasher connected therewith.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates the frame for supporting the clock mechanism, which is preferably spring-operated and must be wound up when it runs down and is provided with a springcontrolled brake-lever 2, which is fulcrumed to swing in a vertical plane to a suitable bearing projecting from the inner face of the front wall of the clock-frame 1 parallel with the asis of the driven wheel on which the brake-shoe of the lever acts. The brake1ever2 is provided at its inner end with a lateral brake-shoe to bear on one side or face of the driven wheel, and is controlled by an expanding spring at its inner end and a retracting spring 3 near its power end, the latter sprin g 3 holding said brake-lever in engagement with the notched arc-rack 4, secured to a cross-piece of the clock-frame.
The driven shaft 5 of the clock mechanism is provided on its projecting end with a disk 6, having an eccentric wrist-pin 7 secured therein and projecting outwardly from its outer face and engaging in the slot 8 in the eccentric yoke 9 at the upper end of the pitman-rod 10, working in the vertical guideway 11, secured to the front wall of the frame 1.
12 is a slotted slide-frame secured to the front face of the slotted guideway 11 by a cross-strip 13, secured in place by thumbscrews 14 15. The slotted Vslide-frame 12 is provided with presser-feet 1G 17 on the lower ends of its bifurcations or legs, which are to be moved down upon the lid of the churn when the latter is in place to hold the lid thereon and maintain the churn in proper position. The vertical slotted slide-frame is provided with a knob or handpiece 18 near its upper end by which to move it up or down, as may be necessary when the thumb-screws 14 15 have been loosened. for said purpose, after which said thumb-screws 14 15 are to be turned up to place to hold the presser-feet upon the churn-lid, and thereby hold both the churn-body and the churn-lid in place dur ing the time that the operation of churning is being performed.
Vhile we have described the construction of ourilnproved churn in the best form known to us, it is obvious that many minor changes might be made in said construction without departing from the character of the invention, and we do not therefore confine ourselves to the exact construction herein described and illustrated.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
1. In a motor for the dashers of churns and the like, the combination, with a frame, and a driven wheel, of a brake-lever pivotally IOO mounted upon a fulcrum extending parallel with the axis of the wheel to swing in a vertical plane and provided at its inner end with a lateral brake-shoe to bear upon one side or face of said Wheel, an expanding spring acting upon the inner end of the lever to hold the brake-shoe in engagement with the wheel, a retracting spring acting on the outer end of the lever to Withdraw the brake-shoe, and a rack on the frame adapted to be engaged by the lever to maintain the brake-shoe in engagement With the Wheel against the tension of said retracting spring, substantially as set forth.
2. In a motor for the flashers of churns and the like, the combination of a frame having a guideway, spring motor mechanism arranged in said frame and having a driven shaft projecting into the guideway, means operated by said shaft for imparting recipro catory motion to a dasher-rod, and means for clamping and holding the churn body and cover in place, the same comprising a bifurcated slide-frame provided with longitudinal slots in the legs thereof and presser-feet on the lower ends of said legs, a cross-piece extending across the bifurcation, thumb-screws connecting said cross-piece to the guideway and extending through said slots, and a knob or inger-piece for adjusting the slide-frame up or down when said set-screws are loosened, substantially as set forth.
