WITNESSES LITHQ. WASHIN Ni-TED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THALEON BLAKE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA;
TOY.
$PECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 656,929, dated August 28, 1900. Application filed May 17, 1900. Serial No. 171000- (NomodelJ To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THALEON BLAKE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Toy, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a toy the principal feature of which is a picture in front of which is arranged a revolving member which when at rest nearly, if not quite, obscures the picture, the toy having means for facilitating the revolution of the member, so that when such member is rapidly turned the picture becomes visible.
This specification is the disclosure of one form of the invention, while the claims define the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the device. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the main part of the device, and Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
The toy has a cylindrical body portion a, which is preferably covered with a sheet of material 19, passing down therefrom around a stick or staff 0, whereby the body a is connected with the staff. The rear end a of the body a is closed and is formed with or carries the picture, which in the drawings is represented to be a portrait.
Fitted rigidly in the front portion of the body Ct is a bracket (1, which is fastened to the lower portion thereof within the same and projects upward to approximately the longitudinal center of the body, where it carries the axis 6 of a wheel 6, made up of a number of segmental or fan-shaped members provided with wings 6 The body a of the device is formed with an opening a in the bottom thereof slightly at one side of the longitudinal center and located just beneath the wheel 6, so that a blast of air passing up through this opening engages the wings e and causes the wheel e to be rapidly turned. The stick or staff 0 is formed with a longitudinally-extending passage 0, which communicates with the opening (1 and the front end of this stick is provided with a mouthpiece c fitted with a whistle of any suitable pattern. A person blowing into the mouthpiece 0 will sound the whistle and will also force a blast of air through the passage 0 and out of the opening 0?. This causes the wheel 6 to turn rapidly on its axis e, and when the wheel e turns the picture on the end a of the body a will be visible. When the wheel is at rest, the pic- 'ture will not be Visible.
For the purpose of increasing the attractive ness of the toy it may have the following words printed or otherwise produced thereon: Blow the whistle and see the next President.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A toy, having a barrel or body, one end of which is adapted to carrya picture, a wheel 'mountedin the barrel or body and having a non-continuous web, so that the picture is visible when the wheel turns, a stick or stem secured to the barrel or body and having a passage therein through which a blast of air may be passed, the passage in the stick communicating with an opening in the barrel, from which opening the blast of air passes to the wheel, to turn the same.
2. A toy, having a barrel or body adapted to carry a picture, a wheel mounted in the barrel or body and having a non-continuous web to expose the picture as the wheel turns, a wing or wings carried by the wheel, and means for assisting the application of a blast of air to the wings of the wheel, to turn the same.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THALEON BLAKE.
