ALBERT L. SHANTZ, OF READING, PENNSYLVANIA.
NECKTlE-FASTENER.
SIPLECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 656,573, dated August 21, 1900.
Application filed February 27, 1900. Serial No. 6,729. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT L. SHANTZ, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of 513 Robeson street, Reading, county of Berks, and State of Pennsylvania, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Necktie-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs,fo1'ming a part thereof, in which similar letters and figures of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to imprdvements in necktie-fasteners; and the object thereof is to provide an efficient article of this character which is adapted for attachment to a necktie and fol-assembling parts of the tie without the necessity of using threads.
The device is durable, inexpensive, and light in weight, and it does not in any manner mar the appearance of the tie to which it is attached.
The invention will be hereinafter fullydescribed, and specifically set forth in the annexed claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figures 1 and 2 are views in planof two blanks employed in the construction of the fastener. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the fastener complete; Fig.
4, a rear View illustrating the device attached to a bow tie, and Fig. 5 a detail sectional plan View taken on a line X X of Fig. 4.
In the practice of my invention I employ a blank A and a blank 13, both composed of malleable sheet metal. The blank A embodies the base-plate a, the side walls 01,, the projecting plates a and the tongue (1, each side wall a, being provided with edge serrations or teeth 1, adapted for engagement with the material ofa necktie. Spurs 2 are also provided for fastening the tie to its shield, all of the said parts being form ed integral from a single sheet of metal. The blank B embodies a keyhole-shaped loop I), longitudinal bars I), and a lip II". In formingthe fastener the side walls a are bent over along the dotted lines 3 until they are approximately at right angles with the base-plate a, and the teeth'or serrations 1 are bent at right angles to the said walls. The spurs 2 are then bent at right angles to the plate a. Then the projections a are rolled around the bars b of the blank B securely fastening the device to the tie.
to form the bearings 4, thus pivoting the loop I; to the plate a, the lip b of this said loop I) being bent downwardly to contact with the tongue 3, whereby the loop is maintained in normal position parallel with the plate a, but can be swung away from said plate by force when desired. In connecting the fastener to a necktie, as O, the side walls a are forced under the'loop c of the bow and bent over, the teeth being embedded in said loop, as illustrated by Fig. 5 of the drawings, thus The spurs 2 are then forced through the shield D and bent over thereon, which operation securely attaches the shield.
The operation and use of the device are obvious. The loop I) is forced away from the tie by' swinging it within its bearings to a sufficient extent to allow of attachment with the collar-button of the wearer. The tie is then swung upwardly and the shield ends placed beneath the collar in the customary manner, the small part of the loop 2) being engaged around the shank of the collar-button to prevent accidental removal of the tie.
I do not confine myself to the exact shape or specific construction of the several parts of the device as herein shown and described, as it is obvious that I am entitled to variations necessary for ties of different shape.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A necktie-fastener to be secured between the bow, and the pasteboard base of such tie,
comprising one plate a, of resilient sheet metal, formed with tines 2, prongs a tongue a wings a and serrated edges 1, all integral parts of said plate, the wings a, and the ser-' rated edges 1, bent so that, the said serrated edges will be embedded in the loop of said bow, the tines 2, bent, passed through said pasteboard base and clenched as specified, to secure said plate to the necktie, and prongs a bent to form tubular hinge-sections A, and another plate B, also of resilient sheet metal, formed with the opening I), and the prongs b, and tongue 19 both integral with said plate B, the tongue I) bent to form a check-spring resting on the tongue a and said plate B, pivotally connected to the said plate a, by the prongs b, and the tubular hinge-sections 4, and said plate B, arranged to lie between ence of two Witnesses, this 10th day of Febsaid necktie, and a shirt-collar, to engage a ruary, A. D. 1900. collar-button with the opening I), and hold said necktie in place, all substantially as and. 5 for the purpose set forth. Witnesses:
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as GEORGE O. ROHRBACH, my invention I have signed my name, in pres- BLAINE B. HELLER.
ALBERT L. SHANTZ.
