Leners Patent No. 65,641, dated .eme 11, 1867.
llge tlgehuh maar tu in tigen ttets ziteut attacking putt nl tige tame,
Be it known that I, LEANDER BURNS, of Portchester, in the county of Westchester, and 'State of New York, have invented new and useful improvements in the Manufacture of Couplings for Shafts or Thills of lyfjmiagesga und Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which .il enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings` forming part of .this specification. y A
The present invention relates to the manufacture of couplings for shafts or thills of carriages or other vehicles; and the invention consists in forming such couplings by' striking or swaging them from a blank made of a suitable shape, in the first instance, and of the requisite size, but of one solid `piece of met-al in a series of dies, of'proper'form to impart to the blank the shape of an ordinary coupling for shafts of vehicles, as will be now described, reference being had to the accompanying plate ofdrawings,in which- Figure I is a. perspective view of the blank from which the coupling is to be made.
Figure 2, a plan view ofthe upper face o'fthe lower die of that set in which the blank is first placed.
Figure 3, a ,plan View of the face of the upper die of. the set of dies referred to in lig. 2.
Figure 4, a vertical section taken in the plane of the line a; x, fig.
Figure 5, a. face view of the upper dieof the next set of dies.' v
Figure 6, a face view ot' the lower diel of the same set to that illustrated in fig. 5, inconneetion with which die the coupling-blank is shown after being acted upon by said dies; and- Figure 7, a transverse vertical section taken in the plane of the line y y, iig. 6.

A, in the drawings, represents the metal blank from which the shaft-coupling is to be made by striking it up in the dies, to be now particularly described. This blank A is made of one solid piece of metal, of the general shape shown in the drawings, which consists of a tail-piece, B, and cross-arm or head, C, in the latter of which there is to be a sufficient quantity of metal that when struck up in the dies the requisite shaft-coupling may be produced. D and E the upper and lower dies ofthe first set of dies, Athe lowerone of which dies is bored out through its centre at F, with its surface cut away or out upon opposite sides of such bore, to an equal extent, depth, shape, and size, as shown at G in the drawings, corresponding to which cut-out portions of the lower die the facevof the upper die is also cut, so that when the two dies are brought together, face to face, a space or opening, H, will be formed or left, of a shape suitable to allow that portion or those arms of the shaftcoupling which, when properly bent, form the eye between which the chill-iron is to be hung by a centre bolt or other suitable pivot or means to beproduced from the blank if placed in the dies, and there struck up, the upper die being cut through its centre to accommodate the tail end of the blank. After the coupling-blank has been struck up in the dies D and E, as above described, it is then placed in thc next set of dies M N for the purpose of preparing the arms of the coupling to be 'bent to form the eye for hanging the thillbar to it. These dies, upon their two faces in contact with each other, are so out out as'to impaiv't to or throw up the said blank or coupling-arms into square corners L, as shown in fig. 7, so that if then bent up atr right angles to form theeye desired, perfect square corners will be left, with the metal through such corners and the other portions of the eye of a uniform thickness, these arms being bent up in a direction toward each other.
In conclusion, it may be here remarked that in lieu of using the last set of dies the desired bend orshape ma;v bc given to the arms of the coupling-blank by the old method or means; this invention consisting in the making of the coupling from a solid blank or piece of metal, which, being subjected to the action of suitable.
dies, whether more or less in number, is brought into the proper shape for use, the bending of the blank to produce the square shoulders where bent constituting the subject of a separate application for Letters Patent bearing even date herewith. l
The rounded portion of the blank which is forced into thc hole in the primary die E, in the process of swaging, is provided with a screw-thread upon which a nut is screwed, and forms a safe and complete means of attachment to the vehicle.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The thin-coupling, constructed as described, by swagng the blank Ain the dies D E and M N, vas, heroin shown and described for the purpose specified.
2. The dies D E, provided with the holes I and opening H, the dies M N wtl1 equal shoulders L, can structed as described for the puliposeof forming the thlI-cou'pling, substantially as herein set forth.
