GEORGE A. EDWARDS, 0E PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HOLDER FOR PADS;
. sPEcIErcArroN forming part of Letters Patent No. 656,283, dated A g 21. 1906- Applioation filed September 25, 1899- Serial No. 731,541- (No model.)
being adapted to move said collar to and from said head, whereby the pad may be conveniently and firmly clamped in position on said head and readily released therefrom.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a holder embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 represents a rear view thereof. Fig. 4 represents a longitudinal section of the holder on a reduced scale, the parts thereof being separated. Fig. 5 represents a view of the back of a pad that may be employed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a spindle which is mounted inany suitable manner and properly rotated. B designates a head which is firmly connected with the forward end of said spindle and partly surrounded by a collar 0, said head and collar in the present case being of conical form and adapted to retainbetween them the edge portion of the fabric of the pad, which portionis bent over the side of said head, while the remaining portion receives suitable filling material.
D designates a sleeve which is fitted on the threaded portion E of the spindle A and provided with the neck F, which freely enters an opening 0 centrally in said collar (J, so that the latter is freely mounted on said neck.
G designates a ring which is firmly secured to the forward end of the neck F and bears freely against the shoulder H, formed around said opening 0, thus connecting or coupling said sleeve D with said collar by a swiveljoint, whereby by rotating said sleeve as it engages with the threaded portion of the spin dle A it may be moved forward and backward and carry with it the collar 0.
It will be seen that when the sleeve is screwed backward by one hand the collar, be ing held by the other hand, moves from the the head B, so that the pad may be placed over said head, after which the sleeve is rotated in reverse direction, so as to ride toward the head, and thus the collar closes against the edge portion of the pad and clamps the same firmly in position, as will be apparent in Fig. 2, it being evident that during these operations the spindle A is at rest and the rotation of the Sleeve does not impart ro tation to the collar, whereby the latter is pre vented from twisting and buckling the edge portion of the fabric of the pad, the effect of which is evident,it being noticed that the pad is molded or shaped so that its edge portion is set back from the face portion and rested upon the head B, against which it is pressed and clamped by the inner face of the collar C, said head being stationary with the spindle A as the collar is advanced upon said edge portion of the pad by the rotation of the sleeve D on said spindle, as hereinbefore stated. When the sleeve is again rotated in the opposite direction, the collar leaves the head and the edge portion of the fabric,whereby the pad may be removed and afterward replaced.
Having ihus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A holder for a pad consisting of ahead, an encircling collar movable to and from the same, a sleeve which is mounted upon a spindie and rotatable thereon and a joint freely coupling said collar and sleeve, adapting the sleeve to carry the collar in both the closing and opening motions thereof without rotating the same.
2. In apad-holder, a collar, athreaded spin= dle carrying the same, a sleeve fitted on the threaded portion of said spindle and a swiveljoint couplingsaid collar and sleeve whereby said sleeve by its rotation is adapted to impart opening and closing motions to said collar without rotating the latter.
3. In a pad-holder, a collar in combination with a sleeve, and a ring which is connected with said sleeve and engages said collar, forming a swivel'joint for said parts.
4. In a padholder, a sleeve provided with a neck, a collar freely mounted on said neck, and a ring which is fitted on said neck and engages with said collar forming a swiveljoint for said collar and sleeve.
5. A head, a threaded spindle carrying the same, a sleeve fitted on the threaded portion of said spindle and formed with a neck, a collar mounted on said neck and partly encircling said head, and a ring fitted to said neck and engaging a shoulder on said collar IO forming a free connection for said collar with said sleeve whereby the rotation of the sleeve on said spindle may impart longitudinal motion to said collar without rotating the same.
