TQ ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN; i
Be it known that ive, Jo1iN.K1LLGone, G. D. CLApsADDLE, and EDWARD SNART, of Arcola, in the county of Douglas, :lnd'in 'the State of' Illinois, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Post-Hole` Angers; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. l
ln the annexed drawings,` making part of this speeication, A represents a platform uponrwvhich are erected two uprights A A', said uprights being connected together at their upper ends by a cross-tic, P. On the inner sides of the nprights A A are formed grooves which run longitudinally of them. B represents ametallic'frame, which is provided with lugs on its edges which play inthe grooves in the uprights acting as guides for the frame B. C represents a shaft which has upon each end a crank-handle. l. This shaft lies across the frame B, having suitublc bearings in its sides, with proper caps for coverixigisaid bearings'. D represents a bevel-wheel which is secured upon the shaft C, which gears into a bevel-wheel, I, upon a vertical shaft, H. E represents a clutchpnlle3,r upon shaft C. G represents a band, one end of which is attached to the cross-tie P, and one end to the clutch-pulley E. This handset-ves to raise and lower the frame B. When the clutch-pulley does not catch into its counterpart on the wheel D it is loose on the shaft C. The vertical shaft H is provided at its lower end with a slot, in which is pivoted the. upper end ofa sleeve, J. J represents a metallic sleeve, which is provided ot its lower end with the auger-wings L L. K represents a pin which is pointed at its lower end, and which extends up through th'e sleeve J. A piv0t-pin, a, passes through the pin K and through n. slot, fr, in the sleeve, and then` through lower end of shaft H, thus pivoting the sleeve and its pin K in theslot ofsaid shaft H. The slot :1: allows the pin K to play up and down in the sleeve J. There is snicient space around-the pin K, between it andthe sleeve, to allow air to pass through said sleeve.
In boring a post-hole with this machine, the sleeve J, with its wings and the point ofpin K, forms an auger which is revolved by the bevel-wheels I and D, aud-is raised and lowered by the frame B. When this auger takes into the earth the pin K is thrust into the earth as deep as the slot in the sleeve will allow it to go, and when it is being drawn ont the pin K draws into the sleeve and allows air to pass down through said sleeve into the hole below the auger-wings to prevent suction and render it easy to withdraw the auger. When the auger has heen withdrawn from the hole-it may be turned up on the pivot a, out of the way, for the purpose of cleansing it.
Having thus fully described our invention, whatwe claim as nen", and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The arrangement of the sleeve J and its pin Kavithv the shaft H, frame B, and band G, substantially as and for the purpose herein speciiied. In -testmony that we claim` the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands and sealsthis 25thday of February, 1867. v 1
