Letters Patent No. 101,160, dated March 22, 1870.
IMPROVE!) EARTH-AUGE R.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMPSON POPE, of the county of Covington, in 'the State of Mississippi, have invented a new and improved Auger for Boring Well or Post-Holes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation'of the same, reference being had to the laccompanying drawings making apart oi this specification, in which- Figure l is a side elevation.
Figure 2is a sectional view.
. Figure 3 is a bottom view.
Like letters in the diiierentgures of the drawings indicate like parts. t v My invention has reference to the class of angers for boring wells or post-holes, in which the cutters or bits may be det-ached and sharpened when dull, and consists of two curved cutters or bits arranged at an incline on the inside of the cylinder, in combination with the plates or braces forming the bottom orbucket thereof, so as to enable the cutters to scoop up the dirt more advantageously, the curve and incline ofthe cuttersbeing such with the sides ofthe cylinder, while revolving or being operated, that all the dirt scooped up, or tine sand met with in boring, will be retained therein until the cylinder is full enough to be emptied ot' it.
To enable others' skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A is the cylinder of the propel' diameter and height, andhaving two upright pieces a a attached centrally to the sides at the upper end thereof, and a cross-piece, l), suitably secured at the top end of each of them.
In the center of the cross-piece a hole is made to receive the shaft c, which will he inserted therethrough and rigidly secured, and have an arm` attached to the head of it crosswse, so that the cylinder or auger may be turned or operated.
The bottom of the cylinder on each side of it is formed with a cutting-edge,
Triangular plates or braces e e are attached to the bottom edge of the cyliuder, next to the cutting-edges d d. They incline and nearly-meet at the center oi' the cylinder.
-To these plates or braces e e, and to the sides of thc cylinder, onthe inside thereof, are attached the curved cutters or bits g. Each'cutter being of the width ot' one side of the plate or brace, and inclining up therefrom, and curved from the lower corner end to the upper corner end diagonally, so as to fit close around the side of the cylinder. Thus, as the cylinder is being turned, these cutters will scoop up the dirt in such a manner that all of it will be retained therein until the cylinder is full enough to be emptied of it.
The cutters being secured by bolts and screw-nuts h enables them to be detached and sharpened when dull.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is-
'The detachable curved cutters g, when arranged at an incline on the inside of the cylinder, in combination with the plates or braces e e, substantially in the manner and for the purpose as herein shown and described. l As evidence that I claimthe foregoing as my invention, I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
