HAYVEYAND ADAMS, OF OMAHA, NEBRASK ASSIGNoR or ONE-HALF TO nnnav F. oADY, oF SAME PLACE.
BAG-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of 'Letters Patent No. 655,359, dated August '7, 1900. Application filed May 8, 1900. Serial No. 15,932. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HAYVEYAND ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of'Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Bag-Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bag-fasteners, and has for its object to provide an improved attachment for application to paper bags and cloth sacks without altering or changing the latter and arranged for conveniently closing the neck or mouth of a bag and for readily opening the latter without cutting or otherwise destroying any of the parts of the device or the bag.
W'ith these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as Will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention. 1 v
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bag having the present fastener applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view taken through the attachingclamp and the adjacent portion of the bag;
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the attaohing-clamp.
Corresponding parts in the figures of the drawings are'design ated by like characters of reference.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates an ordinary paper bag or cloth sack the mouth or neck of which is closed by means of the present invention.
In carrying out the invention the essential parts thereof are a clamp 2 and a flexible cord 3, connected thereto. The clamp is secured to the exterior of the mouth or neck portion of the bag, and the cord has one end connected to the clamp, and the intermediate portion thereof is designed to be Wrapped one or more times about the neck of the bag, which has been previously gathered together in the usual manner, while the opposite free end of the cord is then engaged with the clamp to efiect ively fasten the neck portion of the bag.
The attaching-clamp is formed from a single strip of pliable metal, which is bent into substantially U shape, the extremity of one side thereof being folded inwardly between the opposite sides of the device, as indicated at 4, while the opposite end of the clamp is bent or folded outwardly and rearwardly to form a hook or clamp 5. The clamp is secured to the bag before it is folded, as described, and the bag is provided with a pair of incisions 6 and 7, located at opposite sides of the seam 8 of the bag, so that the device is applied from the inner side of the bag by inserting the opposite ends of the pliable strip outwardly through the respective incisions, after which the wing or ear 4 is pressed tightly against the outer side of the bag, so that the device may firmly embrace the seam, which is the strongest portion thereof. The opposite end of the strip is then bent into the form shown in Fig. 3, and a cord is passed through the looped or substantially U-shaped portion of the clamp, after which the opposite sides thereof are pressed firmly against the cord, and the latter is provided with a knot 9 to form a stop for engagement with the adjacent edge of the clamp in order to effectually prevent the cord from being accidentally pulled or drawn from between the opposite sides of the clamp. The cord is then wrapped about the neck of the bag, and the free extremity thereof is hooked into or engaged with the hook or clamp 5, which latter is then pressed against the cord, so as to hold the latter from accidentally slipping and loosening the tie. To open the bag, it is simply necessary to force the pliable clamping-ear outwardly to loosen the free end of the cord, when the latter may be disengaged from the clamp and unwound from the bag without cutting the cord or otherwise damaging the same or the bag. Thus both the bag and the fastening device are capable of being again used.
What is claimed is- The combination with a bag, of a fastening device for the mouth thereof, and comprising a pliable strip having its opposite ends passed through one side of the bag and from the interior thereof, one projecting end of the strip being longer than the other, the shorter end being bent toward the opposite end and flat against the outer side of the bag, the longer end being bent fiat against the shorter end, and the free extremity thereof being rebent across the outer side of the longer end and forming a pliable hook or clamp, and a flexible cord, one end of which is fixedly clamped by certain folded portions of the strip, and its opposite free end being arranged for engage- IO ment with the flexible clamp or hook.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
- HAYVEYAND ADAMS.
