E. HAECKEL. BATHING DEVICE FOR PRODUCING ARTIFICIAL WAVES (Application filed Sept. 2, 1899.)

ERNST HAQECKEL, or BERLIN, GERMANY.
BATHING DEVICE FOR PRODUCING ARTIFICIAL WAVES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 654,973, dated July 31, 1900.
Application filed September 2, 1899. Serial No. 729,377. (No model.)
To ally/hem it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNST HAECKEL, a subject of the King of Prussia, German Emperor, residing at Berlin, in the Empire of Germany, have invented a new and useful Bathing Device for Providing Artificial Waves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to bathing apparatus; and it has for its object certain improvements on apparatus shown and described in Letters Patent granted to me in Germany under date of February 6, 1899, No. 101,412.
The improvement consists, essentially, in the combination, with a bath-tub, of a rocking support for the bather having vertical walls arranged to act upon the water in the tub to produce a backward and forward flow over or substantially over the body of the bather when the support is rocked instead of a plain support, as shown in my said German patent. In order that the support may be so rocked without undue exertion by the bather, 1 pivot said support within the bath-tub at a suitable point intermediate of the opposite ends or about midway of the length of said support.
That my invention may be fully understood I will describe the same in detail, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figures 1 and 2 are longitudinal vertical sections of a bathing apparatus embodying my invention, Fig. 2 illustrating a slight structural modification; and Figs. 3. and 4 are vertical cross-sections taken, respectively, on lines so a: and y y of Figs. 1 and 2. v
The bath-tub or is or may be of any wellknown construction and form, and within the same, about midway of the length thereof, I provide forked bearings c for journals d, secured on a board or plate 17 of such a'length as to accommodate the body of a person, or substantially so, said board or plate having one end-namely, the head end-curved upwardly, as shown atb, Fig. 1, while the foot end is closed in by vertical side walls 6 and that as the latter is rocked the water in the bath-tub Cb is caused to move from the head to the foot thereof, and vice versa, over the supporting-board and the body of the person thereon, and so that the head and shoulders may be completely immersed in the water, if desired.
In the modified construction shown in Figs. 2 and 4 the support for the body consists, essentially, of an auxiliary bath-tub I), having side walls 6, as well as end walls, the foot end portionbeing'completely boxed in by a top board e Said auxiliary bath-tub b is likewise journaled about midway of its length in the main tub a, forked bearings c for the journals d being provided, as shown.
By using forked bearings for the journals of the support I) or auxiliary tub I) these can be readily lifted out of the main tub a or a, and the said tub can then be used in the ordinary manner.
In the construction shown in Figs. 2 and 4 the necessary amount of water may be supplied to the auxiliary tub I), if desired, and such as will spill out of it will then be retained in the main tub Cb.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The combination with a bath-tub, of a rocking support for. the bather provided with an upturned head-rest at one end and with a boxed-in foot portion forming a pocket for confining water when the support is rocked in one direction and causing such water to flow over the body of the bather when said support is rocked in an opposite direction, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name, this 19th day of August, 1899, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ERNST HAEOKEL. Witnesses:
WOLDEMAR HAUPT, HENRY HASPER.
