To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE D. SCOTT, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Birmingham, in the county of Jefferson and State of Alabama, have invented a certain new and useful Lamp-Post, of which the following is a specification.

The object of the present inventionis to provide a lamp-post that will permit of its belo ing readilyraised and lowered to the end that the light maybe conveniently attended to or trimmed fromA the-ground in safety in small thoroughfares and'other places where people and wagons are continually passing to and 1 5 fro; and the invention consists of the improvements hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, ct is the base of the lamp-post, carrying two movable members 0b' and a2, which, as shown, are afforded 4o a rotary and an oscillating or hinged movement, respectively. The member a2 may have an arm or projection which is adapted to carry a light 0,3, movably suspended therefrom. Rising through the post from an oilreservoir'is an oil-supply tube b, which leads to the light a3 and is adapted tov convey oil under pressure thereto, where it becomes vaporized in the usual manner and is ignited. This supply-tube is of very small dimension 5o in cross-section and has much the resemblance of a wire. In order to permit of the proper movement of thevarious' partsl of the lamppost, the supply-tube is coiled, as shown, which coil compensates for the movement of the members without interfering with the supply of oil to the light a3. Attached to the member a2 is a link, as c, which carries a cross-head c', adapted towork in a slot cut in or in ways provided on the member a. This permits of the light being brought and held 6o in proper position for cleaning and lighting when the member a2 .has been released from the locking attachment and turned down, as

will be hereinafterdescribed. Fixed to the member a2 is a rod CZ, provided with a part 65 or pin d', having a twofold purpose-namely,

to hold the light in normal position by engaging a latch (Z2 and to lock the'lamp-post against the rotary movement'vwhen in normal position by penetrating the overlapping portions 7o of the parts@ and a. The latch d2 is provided with a shank e, protruding from the lamp-post and adapted to receive a key, as which the attendant incharge uses to release the latch and permit of the light being low- Aered and rotated, so that it may be swung above the pavement.

Referring now to Fig. l and as illustrated in full lines, the lamp and post are in normal position. The rod d is held by the latch d2, 8o thus locking all the movable members of the post. The attendant in charge wishing to clean, adjust, or light the lamp uses his key e', in connection with. the shank e, to lift the latch, and a slight turn will be sufficient to release the latch d?, whereupon the member a2 is caused to turn about its pivot A into the position shown by the dotted lines. The slot 0,4 accommodates the tube b. Thus it is not injured when the top of the post is turned 9o about its hinge. The cross-head c', abutting against the lower end of the'slot in the member a', serves to hold it in this position, and the counterbalance f prevents sudden movements or jars. Hence Ido not limit myself tothe precise construction and 'arrangement of parts hereinabove set forth, and'illustrated in the drawings; but, n Having thus described the nature and objects of the invention, what I claim as new, andl desire'to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination in a lamp-post having a slot, of a member hinged to the post and provided with a lateral projection, a counterbalance connected withv the hinged member, a link pivoted to said hinged member, and a crosshead workin g in the slot in the post and attached to the link for guiding and holdingv the hinged member in respect to the post, sub-y stantially as described. 3. The combination in a lamp-post of a base carrying two members, whereof both are afforded a rotary movement and the onean os- @mating movement, a lamp' suspended, from the oscillating memberV and-adapted to respond to changes in its position, means for raisingand lowering the member carrying the lamp, and a locking attachment whereby when said member is in lowered position the revoluble member is free to turn, substantially as described. i i f 4. Alamp-post consisting of a base, a latch, fa post portion revolubly mounted on the base, a hinged member terminating in an arm or projection having a movable lamp, a cross-head and its complemental link adapted to guide the hinged member, and a rod attached to the hinged member andhaving a lpin adapted to engage the latch when in nor-v mal position and when in abnormal position to permit of the post portion being rotated,

substantially as described.

5. A lamp-post consisting of a base, a revo= luble post portion, a slotted hinged member carrying a movable lamp,and a supplyrtube leading to the movable lamp through` the lmembers and coiled to permit the members to rotate and oscillate Without interfering j with the supply, substantially as described.
