TO ALL WHOM IT MAY OONCERN:
Be it known that I, THOMAS PATTERSON, of the city, county, and State of- New York, have invented a. new and improved Pump; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical cross-section of my improved pump, the plane of section being indicated by the line a: x, iig. il.
Figure 2 is a vertical cross-section through the line y y, iig. 3.
Figure 3 is a central vertical section through the line z e, iig. 1.

This invention relates to punip in which acontinuous stream of water is made to pass through the suction and discharge pipes. It consists principally of a radial arm or piston that oscillates around the axis of a circular cylindrical vessel, in 'which a stationary abutment is arranged extending from the axis to the circumference, und on ca eh side of which are openings of channels which connect the cylinder with the discharge and suction pipes. These pipes are arranged above and below the two channels, and have valves where they connect, so that each of .the channels serves alternately to convey, the water or other liquid towards the cylinder and to the dischargev pipes. The operation is simple, and consists in imparting oscillating motion to the piston by-any suitable mechanical movement.
A represents'a cylinder made of cast iron, er any other suitable material, and supported on standards or a bed, B, of suitable construction. A shaft, C, passes through its centre, and is mounted in suitable boxes arranged in the heads a l of the cylinder A, and connects withk the lower part of the head b, as shown in the drawings. The cylinder D is divided into two equal parts by a vertiealpartition, E, which extends through its whole length, and is continued in the cylinder `.A, in which it is enlarged solas to extend up to the shaft C, as shown. The outer end of the channels c d, Awhich are formed by the partition E in the cylinder D, enters into a vertical pipe, I", in which the partition is also continued so as to divide the saine into two semi-cylindrical upright chambers, c andf, as shown in tig. 2. At the upper end of each chamber ef a-revarranged the discharge valves g and L, and at their lower ends the suction valves z' and k, respectively, or vice versa. The discharge pipe G is secured to the'uppcr end of the cylinder F, and the suction pipe H to its lower end, as shown in figs.
. 2 and 3. A radial plate, I,'or aplate of the length of the cylinder A, and of a height that corresponds with the distance between the shaft C and the inner periphery `of the cylinder A, and of suitable thickness, is secured to the shaft C in any suitable manner, so that it will oscillate with the shaft C, to which an oscillating motion is imparted by any suitable mechanism.
The operation' is such that when the piston I revolves in lthe direction of the arrow in4 iig. 1, the water in the chambers el and e will be forced out through the valve g, while the valve 7c, in the chamberf, is opened and the water drawn into the chamber c. The piston, I inishesits stroke when it strikes against the abutment E, and during the return stroke the motion of the water in the chanibers and position of the valves are reversed. A continuous stream of water is thus forced through the valves g and 71, alternately into the discharge pipe. A pinion, l, is shown at the end of the shaft'C, and rushes intoa toothed segment, m, which is operated by a lever, a, so as to impart oscillating motion to the shaft C; but any other suitable device may be uscil for that purpose.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentv 1. A pump having an oscillating piston, I, within the cylinder A, which cylinder is provided with a parttion or abutment, E, and connected with two channels, c and rl, all arranged substantially as described.
2. The semi-cylindrical chambers c, d, e, and f, provided with the valves g, 71,'1', and c, and divided by moans of a partition, E, all substantially as set forth.
THOS. PATTERSON.
