BOLSTER-ROLL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 654,114, dated July 17, 1900.
Application filed February 19,1900. Serial No. 5,693. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN B. J ONES, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolster-Rolls, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improve-' ments in bolster-rolls, the purpose of which is to enable said rolls to be shipped knocked down and readily put together by the retailer, so as to save expense in storing, packing, and in transportation.
To such end the invention consists in certain structural improvements, the nature of which will appear from the following description and the essential features of the same pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a complete roll put together and in shape for use. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the longitudinal framework of the roll without covering and in a partly-folded condition. Fig. 3 is a perspective of the same covered and fiat. Fig. at is a broken elevation of one of the ends partly in section and showing at one side a transverse section of part of the longitudinal frame. Fig. 5 is an edge View of the end, and Fig. 6 is a transverse section in line 6 6 of Fig. 1-.
The longitudin al framework consists of comparatively thick side strips A A, between which are a series of parallel slats a, bound together by flexible transverse strips a of thin metal or other material to form a sheet or web one surface of which is without offsets, while the opposite surface has offsets, due to the extra thickness of the side pieces. This sheet may be covered at the factory, as shown in Fig. 3, or it may be shipped in the condition seen in Fig. 2 and covered by the retailer to suit his own taste and requirements.
The end pieces B may be of any desired form, being here shown as circular and notched at b b, one side of each of these notches being preferably deeper than the other, so as to receive the entire thickness of the outside edges of the side pieces, while the opposite edges are sufficiently raised to bring the inside of the slats flush with the periphery of the end piece.
The longitudinal sheet is of such proportions that when properly wrapped about the end pieces its side pieces enter the notches, while the intermediate slats rest upon the peripheries of the end pieces, and it may be fastened to the end pieces in any desired way, nails 0 being here shown driven through the ends of the slats and into the edges of the end pieces.
In the inside edges of the side pieces A A are a series of sockets d, and resilient braces D, preferably of spring-wire, are fitted to the interior of the roll with their ends sprung into these sockets. This makes an exceedingly strong and at the same time flexible construction, and, if desired, the braces may be secured against lateral movement at their middle portions by means of staples d.
Besides the numerous advantages having to do with storing, packing, transportation, &c., the improved roll is advantageous because of the fact that the longitudinal portion may be readily stripped from the end pieces when it needs to be recovered.
More orless variation in the exact form and construction is possible, and for that reason I do not limit myself except as set forth in the following claims.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a bolster-roll, the combination with the end pieces, B, having notches, b, b, of the middle portion made up of the longitudinal strips, a, the outer side pieces, A,'A, and flexible devices connecting the side pieces and strips, the notches and the side pieces being so proportioned that the outside edges of the side pieces may be sunk into the end pieces, flush with the periphery thereof; substantially as described.
2. In a bolster-roll, the combination with the end pieces, B, of the flexible longitudinal portion made up of a series of slats and flexible strips connecting them, sockets in the marginal slats and a resilient brace fitted to the interior of the longitudinal portion and having its ends seated in said sockets; substantially as described.
3. In a bolster-r011, the combination with approximately-circular end pieces, of longitndinal strips secured upon said end pieces, sockets in the side strips, resilient braces adapted to distend said longitudinal strips and having their ends resting in the sockets and staples, d, adapted to secure said braces upon the longitudinal strips and against lateral sway; substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my 10 hand at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, this 14th day of February,
JOHN B. JONES.
