Be it known that I, ANDREAS SCHREL, a citizen of Germany, residing at Munich, Bavaria, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Punching-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to punches and similar machines in which it is desirable to have means for causing the punch-holder to be engaged and disengaged from the means for actuating it.
The invention consists, broadly, in certain novel means by which the punch-holder can be caused to be engaged and also disengaged from the means for actuating it, which said means is arranged to alsolower and raise the punch-holder when the latter has been disengaged from the actuating means, and in such other features of construction and arrangement as will be fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a machine embodying my invention in my preferred form of construction. Figs. 2 and 3 are similar sectional ele- Vations showing the movable partsin different relative positions.
Referring to the several views,'h represents the punch-holder, that is arranged to reciprocate in a guideway in the frame e of the machine. In its upper part the punch-holder is forked, as shown in Fig. 2, and has a bar 1 connecting the forks. In this open space or aperture in the punch-holder is arranged to rotate freely an eccentric c. Between the eccentric and the angle of the fork is a tongue z, shaped as shown in Fig. 2. The bar 1 has a channel or aperture opening into the lsaid aperture or open space in the pu uch-holder, in which reciprocates a slide 12, having a spiral spring back of it, tending to force it into said aperture. IVhen the slide is forced outwardly in the position of Fig. 2, a pin 13, sliding in a channel or aperture in the bar l, is pressed inwardly by a spring let, secured to one of the forks, and enters the notch 16 in the slide, thus locking it in that position.

In the position of Fig. 2 the aperture in the punch-holder is so contracted longitudinally that the eccentric at the ends of a vertical di-` ameter is in contact'with, respectively, the tongue .e and the slide 12. Consequently the punch-holder will now be reciprocated by the eccentric.
For the purpose of withdrawing the pin 13 out of the notch in the slide there is provided a rock-shaft mounted in the frame of the machine, having an arm 15, whose free end slides in an aperture inthe free end of the pin 13, so that on the movement of the punch-holder, and with it the pin 13, the arm 15 again reciprocates freely in the hole in the pin 13. On this rock-shaft is mounted another arm 5 that is connected by a rod 6 with a lever 7, which lever is pivotedon the frame of the machine by a bolt S.V
A disk m is mountedon a suitable shaft journaled in the frame of the machine, which disk has a spring-pin l, that when the disk is rotated by the handle 7c im pinges on the lever 7 and, rocking it,l will through the lever system move the pin 13 out from engaging the notch in the slide 12, and thus free the punchholder from the action of the eccentric.
Mounted von the same shaft as the disk m is a disk 10, having a lug q, that is so arranged that after the spring-pin Z has moved the lever 7, and thus disengaged the pin 13,
it will contact with a lug n on the punchholder and force it downwardly. The slide 12 being released will thus be forced in the bar 1. The punch-holder also contains a springpin o, arranged to contact with thelug q,
`which spring-pin will retreat and-allow the lug to pass downwardly by it Without moving the punch-holder, but which will contact with the lug on the reverse movement of the lug q and serve to raise the punch-holder, when the slide12 will be forced outwardly by spring back of it and will be engaged by the pin 13 again.
A plate-spring r, secured to the frame of the machine, bears on a flat portion of the periphery of the disk m and tends to retain the disk, with its connected parts, in the position shown in Fig. 1.
The operation of my device is as follows: Supposing the eccentric to come to rest in the IOO position shown in Fig. 2, the handle 7c is moved in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 1, when the spring-pin Z will move the lever '7, which latter through its connected levers will withdraw the pin 13 from engaging the slide 12, this leaving the punch-holder free to be moved downwardly.` Now on afurther move.- ment of the lever 7c the lug q will impinge on the extremity of the spring-pin o, which will retreat without causing any movement of the punch-holder; but a stillfurther movement of the lug q will bring it into contact with the lug n, and thus cause the punch-holder to be lowered. When it is desired to raise the punch-holder, the lever k is moved in the reverse` direction to that just described, when the lug q will engage the lower side of the holder will be again coupled. A further movement of the handle 7o in the said reverse direction will bring the spring-pin Z into contact `with the end of the lever 7, when the spring-pin will retreat and pass this lever without causing any movement of the lever system.
r:Illavlng thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

The combination in a machine of the character described, of a punch-holder, means for reciprocating the punch-holder, means for causing the punch-holder to engage the reciprocating means, and means arranged to both disengage the punch-holder from the reciprocating means and then advance the punchholder.
2. rlhe combination in a machine of the character described, of apunch-holder, means for reciprocating the punch-holder, means for causing the punch-holder to engage the reciprocating means, means arranged to both disengage the punch-holder from the reciprocating means and then advance the punch-holder, said latter means also adapted upon a reverse movement to` raise the punch-holder to the position for engaging with the said reciprocating means.
\ 3. The combination in a machine of the character described, with a punch-holder and an actuating-eccentric, of means for causing the punch-holder to engage the eccentric, and means arranged to both disengage said members and then advance the punch-holder.
4. The combination in a machine of the character described, with a punch-holder and an actuating-eccentric, of means for causing the punch-holder to engage the eccentric, and means arranged to both disengage said members and then advance the punch-holder, said latter means also adapted upon a reverse tric and a punch-holder, of means for automatically causing theeccentric to be engaged by the punch-holder when the latter is in the upper position, and means arranged to both disengage said membersand then forcethe punch-holder downwardly, said latter means also adapted upon a reverse movement to raise the punch-holder to the position for engagement with the eccentric.
7. The combination in a machine of the character described, of a punch-holder, means for reciprocating the punch-holder, means for disengaging said reciprocating means from the punch-holder, a shaft mounted in the frame of the machine, an operating-handle secured to said shaft, a disk secured to said shaft, a spring-pin mounted on said disk, a lever for operating said disengaging means, said lever having its free extremity arranged to be moved by the said spring-pin, a lug connected with said shaft, and a lug on the punch-holder disposed inthe path of movement of said lug, the lugs' being so arranged that on a further movement of said shaft after the spring-pin has operated said disengaging means, they will contact and advance the punch-holder.
8. The combination in a machine of the character described, of a punch-holder, means for reciprocating the punch-holder, means for disengaging said reciprocating means, an operating-handle secured to said shaft, a disk secured to said shaft, a spring-pin mounted on said disk, a lever for operating said disengaging means, said lever having its free extremity arranged to be moved by said springpin, a lug connected with said shaft, a lug on the punch-holder disposed in the path of movement of said lug, the lugs being so arranged that on a further movement of said shaft after the spring-pin has operated the said disengagiug means, they will contact and advance the punch-holder, said disk having a Hat portion en its periphery, a spring secured to the frame of the machine and bearing ousaid disk, said-spring being so arranged as to engage said flat portion of the disk and retain the disk in its disengaging position.
9. The combination in a machine of the character described, of a punch-holder, means for reciprocating the punch-holder, means for disengaging said reciprocating means from IOO IIO
the punch-holder, a shaft mounted in the frame of the machine, an operating-handle secured to said shaft, a disk secured to said shaft, a spring-pin mounted on said disk, a lever for operating said disengaging means, said lever having its free extremity arranged to be moved by said spring-pin, a lug connected with said shaft, a lug on the punchholder disposed in the path of movement of said lug, the lugs being so arranged that on a further movement of said shaft after the spring-pin has operated said disengaging means, they will contact and advance the punch-holder, a spring-pin on the punchholder disposed in the path of movement-'of the said lug connected with the shaft, said latter spring-pin being so arranged thatit will retreat to allow the said latter lug to advance Without moving the punch-holder, but will engage the lug and raise the punch-holder on the reverse movement of the disk.
10. The combination in a machine of the character described, of an eccentric, a punchholder reciprocating in a guideway in the frame, and having an aperture therein in which said eccentric is arranged to rotate freely, a slide reciprocating in a channel in the pun ch-holder that is longitudinal thereto, said slide being arranged to enter said aperture and contract it longitudinally to cause said eccentric to make direct contact With the walls of the aperture and reciprocate the punch-holder, and means for securing said slide in said contracting position.

The combination in a machine of the character described, of an eccentric, a punchholder reciprocating in a guideway in the frame and having an aperture therein in which said eccentric is arranged to rotate freely, a slide reciprocating in a channel in the punch-holder that is longitudinal thereto, said slide being arranged to enter said aperture and contract it longitudinally to cause said eccentric to make direct contact With the Walls of the aperture and reciprocate the punch-holder, and means for automatically securing said slide when in said contracting position.
12. The combination in a machine of the character described, of an eccentric, a punchholder reciprocating in a guideway in the frame and having an aperture therein in which said eccentric is arranged to rotate freely, a slide reciprocating in another aperture in the punch-holder and arranged to enter said former aperture and contract it longitudinally to cause said eccentric to contact With the Walls of the aperture and reciprocate the punch-holder, said slide having a cavity in its side, a pin sliding in the punch-holder and arranged to enter said cavity and retain the slide in said position for causing the operation of the punch-holder, a spring secured to the punch-holderand tending to force the slide into said contracting position.
13. The combination in a machine of the character described, of an eccentric, a punchholder reciprocating in a guideway in the frame and having an aperture therein inwhich said eccentric is arranged to rotate freely, a slide reciprocating in another aperture in the punch-holder and arranged to enter said former aperture and contract it longitudinally to cause said eccentric to cont-act with the Walls of said former aperture and reciprocate the punch-holder, said slide having a cavity in its side, a pin sliding in the punch-holder and arranged to enter said cavity and retain the slide in said position for causing the operation of the punch-holder, a spring engaging said pin for retaining it in said contracting position, and means for moving said pin to release said slide.

The combination in a machine of the character described, of an eccentric, a punchholder reciprocating in a guideway in the frame and having an aperture therein in whichA said eccentric is arranged to rotate freely, a slide reciprocating in another aperture in the punch-holder and arranged to enter said former aperture and contract it longitudinally to cause said eccentric to contact with the walls of said former aperture and reciprocate the punch-holder, said slide having a cavity in its` side, a pin sliding in the punch-holder and arranged to enter said cavity and retain the slide in said position for causing the operation of the punch-holder, a spring secured to the punch-holder andtending to force the slide into the said lcontracting position, a rock-shaft mounted on the frame, said pin having an aperture in its free extremity, an arm on said rock-shaft having its free extremity engaging said pin by the Walls of its said aperture, an-
other arm on said rock-shaft, a lever pivoted to the frame, a rod connecting said latter lever with said second arm on the rock-shaft, and means for moving said lever to cause said pin to release said slide.
15. The combination in la machine of the character described, of an eccentric, a punchholder reciprocating in a guideway in the frame and having an aperture therein in which said eccentric is arranged to rotate freely, a slide reciprocating in another aperture in the punch-holder and arranged to enter said former aperture and contract it longitudinally to cause said eccentric to contact With the Walls of said former aperture and reciprocate the punch-holder, said slide having a cavity in its side, a pin sliding in the punch-holder and arranged to enter said cavity and retain the slide in said position for causing the operation of the punch-holder, a spring secured to the punch-holder and tending to force the slide into the said contracting position, a rockshaft mounted on the frame, said pin having an aperture in its free extremity, an arm on said rock-shaft having its free extremity engaging said pin by the Walls of its said aperture, another arm on said rock-shaft, a lever pivoted to the frame, a rod connecting said latter lever with said second arm on the roekshaft, a shaft mounted in the frame of the machine, an operating-handle secured to said shaft, a disk secured to said shaft, a springpn hmounted on said disk and arranged to move said lever, a lug connected with said shaft, and a lug on the punch-holder disposed in the path of movement of said lug, the lugs being so arranged that on a further movement of said shaft after the sprng-pin has operated ro said dsengaging means, they will contact and force the punch-holder downwardly.
