The improvements will be readily understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, which exhibits in perspective a device illustrating my invention.
In the drawing, A indicates a crank, which may for the present be assumed as in motion,
so as to constitute a driver of the apparatus; 13, a slide, to which, when desired, reciprocating motion is to be imparted; O, a guide for the slide; D, a connectingrod reaching from the crank into engagement with the slide, the means of engagement being peculiar, as hereinafter set forth; E, an upwardlyopening notch in that end of the connecting-rod which engages the slide; F, a guide-slot formed in a projection from the upper surface of the slide, such guide-slot .being parallel with the path of the slide movement, and being arranged to receive the end of the connecting-rod and permit under certain circumstances the reciprocation of the end of the connecting-rod therein; G, a lover pivoted to the slide and disposed transversely over the notched end of the connecting-rod, and adapted to drop into said notch and serve in locking the slide to the connecting-rod H, a weight upon this lever, serving to insure the proper dropping of the lever into the notch; J, a lever pivoted to a fixed point, such point being shown as upon the guide 0; K, a lifting-bar projecting from the lever J under the lever G, and parallel with the path of motion of the slide; and L, a projection from the upper surface of the slide to receive the slot F and to support the pivot of the lever G.
When the parts are in the position shown in the drawing and the crank is in motion, it is obvious that continuous reciprocating motion ing-bar K'will rise and the lever G will be lifted out of engagement with the connectingrod. The connecting-rod will continueits motion, but the slide will remain stationary. In this condition, if the lever J be pushed backward, the lever G will again engage the notch and the slide will reciprocate. The lever J may extend as desired, and beprovided with a handle; or it may be connected to cords or rods,
by means of which it may be properly moved The weight H is not essenfrom a distance. tial, as the weight of the lever G may be sufficient to cause the proper engagement of the lever with the notch, and a spring may, if desired, be employed in connection with the lever to cause its engagement. 7
It is obvious that the slide may be the driver of the apparatus, reciprocating mot-ion being in some manner imparted to it from without. In such case the crank becomes the driven element of the apparatus, the operation of theimprovement being as in the previous case.
The connecting-rod D, instead of being connected with the crank, may be connected with a reciprocating piece of mechanism. The end of the connecting-rod which engages the slide is, so far as my improvements are concerned, a mere reciprocating element, and the function of my improvement is to provide for the impartation and arrest of motion between two reciprocating parts of machinery.
Numerous applications in the art of mechanurgy may be found for my device. Two illustrations will be given,inte11ded to serve as mere examples. Let the slide B be connected with the plunger-rod of a pump or with devices for transmitting reciprocating motion from the slide to the plunger-rod, and let A representacrank to serve in drivingthe pump through the medium of my improved device, rotary motion being imparted tothe crank in anysuitable manner. Then by means of my device, while the crank is continuously revolving; the pump may be caused to operate or remain at rest, as desired. Again, let the slide be connected with a continuously-reciprocating part of a steam-engine or similar motor, and let A represent a crank to which rotary motion is to be at times imparted from such motor. Then by means of my device,
while-the slide B is continuously being recipxo rocated by the motor, the crank may be caused to revolve or remain at rest, as desired.
