SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 654,002, dated July'1'7, 1900.

Be it known that I, WORTHINGTON H. IN- GERSOLL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hamburg, in the county of Sussex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Boiler-Tube Scraper, of
which the following is a full, clear, 'and'exact description. 7
My invention relates to that class of boilertube scrapers in which a shank carries a series of spring-pressed arms provided with cutting-blades or cutting edges.
The object of my invention is, first, to improve the cutting-blades so as to increase their efficiency second, to providea strengthened construction of the shank; third, to give the arms a strong support when closed, so as to guard against the breaking of the rivets by which said arms are pivoted to the shank, and, fourth, to so construct the tool that the scale and dirt will find a ready exit and will not interfere with the pivotal movement of in which similar characters of reference indi-' cate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective view of my improved boiler-tube scraper. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof on line 2 2 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the shank on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
The shank A has at its rear end a screwthreaded reduced portion A, upon which is adapted to screw the pipe B, by means of which the scraper is operated in the usual manner. Adjacent to the screw-thread the shank has a beveled shoulder A and at a distance from the front end a disk or circular flange A provided at intervals with throughapertures A and having its front surface A preferably inclined somewhat in a forward direction from its outer edge to the center. In the rear of the disk A between the aper tures A thereof, are located ribs A", L-shaped in end view (see Fig. 3)-that is, each rib is double and consists of two members convergingtoward the shank. Opposing members of adjoining ribs are parallel with each other. On the other or front face of the disk A are located other ribs or lugs AZlikewis L -shaped in end view and having parallel opposing members- -that "is, these lugs A are located in the exact continuation of the ribs A in the same planes therewith. They differ from the said ribs in length and also by the fact that while the lugs A increase in width from the disk A to their free ends the width of the ribs A is decreased gradually, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The shank at its front end terminates in a polygonal tapering core A Between opposing parallel lugs A are pivoted, by means of. rivets O passing through said lugs, the arms D, generallyfour in number. These arms have on their innerfaces and slightly in front of the pivots shoulders from the arms. As shown in Fig. 2, the
flanges D of two arms are in advance of the flanges ofthe other two arms and by -overlapping these flanges prevent the return of soot and scale. The springs E, between their points of engagement with the arms D, are in contact with the tapering core A The front edges D of the arms D are rounded.
On the outer surfaces of the arms D are provided recesses for the reception of the chilled cutting-blades F. These blades are given a much sharper and more efficient edge than in the construction used heretofore by making their front surfaces F inclined rearwardly from their outer edges toward the arms, so
that the cutting edge F will be in advance of central rear rib D, the front end of which is substantially perpendicular to' the arm and abuts against a central rib F on the blade F. The blade is attached to the arm D by means of four lugs F two in front of the cutting edge and two in the rear thereof, these lugs being countersunk in the outer surface of the arms D and secured thereto by screws G.
The arms D have rear end surfaces D which are adapted to lie flat against the surface A of the disk A when the arms are closedthat is, when they are brought together at their front ends-so that the arms in this position have an extended bearing on the disk A and are well braced by it, thus relieving the rivets O of excessive strain and preventing their breakage.
The openings A allow any scale or dirt loosened by the blades F and reaching the rear I 5 end of the tool to pass through the disk A so that the joints at the pivots 0 will not be come clogged. The ribs A give the disk A the necessary strength to resist any pressure exerted by the arms D against the front face A The attachment of the blades F to the arms by means of four lugs 15 is very strong. The particular construction of the blades with an undercut edge renders them exceedingly efficien t. 2 5 Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A boiler-tube scraper,comprising a shank having a transverse disk, a tapering core in advance of the disk, lugs extending lengthwise of the core in advance of the disk, ribs extending rearwardly from the disk in longitudinal alinement with the said lugs, the disk being apertured between the ribs and the lugs, and having a beveled front surface, scraping- 3 5 arms pivoted between the lugs and having heels adapted to engage the beveled surface of the disk, interrupted longitudinal central ribs on the outer surfaces of said arms, blades secured to the arms between the sections of said ribs and provided with central ribs reg istering with those of the arms, and springs engaging said arms and the tapered, core.
2. Aboiler-tube scraper,comprisingashank,
arms movably connected therewith, and
blades secured to said arms and each provided with a transverse cutting edge, and also with four attaching-lugs, two in front of the cutting edge and two in the rear thereof, these lugs and blades being countersunk in the outer surface of the arms, and fastening de-' vices, such as screws, passing through said lugs and into the arms.
