COMBINED DOOR BELL AND BURGLAB ALARM.
(Application filed. Beiwt. 1a, 1899.)
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT Orrrcn.
IIAROL D A. HIGBEE, OF LEEDS POINT, NEW JERSEY.
COMBINED DOOR-BELL. AND BURGLAR-ALAEM.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent N0. 653,999, dated July 1'7, 1900;
Application filed September 18,1899. Serial No. 730,831; (No model.)
Burglar-Alarm; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable oth-v ers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to produce a combined door-bell, burglar-alarm, and keyhole-guard which shall be simple of construction, cheap of manufacture, and simple of manipulation, one which will operate in connection with the keyhole of a door, and which will give an alarm when the key is inserted in the lock. a
With this object in view I construct a device of this nature such as is described in this specification and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a rear elevation of my invention, showing a portion of one element broken away. Fig. 2 is a front elevation showing the door in dotted lines, and Fig. 3 is a View partly in section and partly in detail.
In the construction of an alarm in accord ance with my,invention I provide a base-piece a, to be secured to a door adjacent its keyhole and having a spindle b projecting therefrom, upon which is pivoted a clapper-arm 0, having a clapper d, and to the outer end of which is secured a suitable gong ct, havinga lug 6 upon its inner surface. Pivoted to the upper end of the clapper-arm c is a dog e, and extending from the clapper-arm to a point beyond that at which the dog is pivoted is a lugf, forming a stop for the dog when the latter is in its normal position. A spring g is secured at one end to the clapper-arm c, with its free end engaging the dog in such a manner as to cause the latter to retain a position against the lug e. Engaging the free end of the dog e is a notched segment h, having a pivoti to be passed through the door directly beneath the keyhole, and-to the outer end of the pivot'i is secured a keyhole-guard 76 of suit able design and of such size as to completely cover the keyhole when the latter is in its normal position. A curved pieceZ is arranged above the keyhole-guard to form a bearing for its upper edge, and on the outer face of the guard is a knob m, by means of which it may be rocked to allow a key to be placed in the hole beneath.
From the above description it will be seen thatin order to insert a key in the keyhole of a door to which my invention is attached it will be necessary to rock the guard It, and when this is done the segment 7t will be rocked through the medium of the pivot c', and as the segment is rocked its notched edge will pass over and vibrate the dog 6, carrying with it the clapper-arm o and the clapper d, causing the latter to beat upon the lug b of the gong ct, resulting in a ringing of the gong. Springs 1 and 2 are secured to the clapperarm and to the notched segment to hold the parts in their normal positions, and upon the ends of thepivot i may be placed washers a", to be secured to the faces of the door as bearings for the pivot.
Not only will my invention serve as an alarm to operate upon the insertion of a key in the look, but it may also be used as a doorbell to be operated by the rocking of the keyhole-guard is.
It will be readily understood that I may make slight alterations in the construction of my device without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A combined door-bell and burglar-alarm comprisinga base-plate adapted to be secured to the inner face of a door, a spindle projecting from said base-plate, a gong mounted on the spindle, a clapper pivoted to the spindle, a second spindle adapted to be passed through the door to which the base-plate is secured and adjacent thereto, a notched segment secured to one end of the spindle and in engagement with one end of the clapper, a lever secured to the opposite end of the second-named spindle whereby the latter maybe rocked,and a guide secured to'the outer face ofthe door to receive the lever. 1
In testimony whereof I aflixmy signature in presence of two witnesses.
