To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known thatI, WVILLIAM A. DUNLAP, a ment of the bolts citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of ennsylvania, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Attaching Handles to Vessels, of which im provct ments the following is a specification.

The invention described herein relates to certain improvements in the manner of detachably connecting handles to coit'ee-pots, be. In the manufacture of enameled coffee i pots the handle, which is not enameled, must 1 be attached after the body is enameled, as the enamel coating is easily broken or i cracked by blows riveting is impracticable.

This invention has for its object a construction and arrangement of parts whereby the handle may be secured to the body without injury to the enamel-surface.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a coffee-pot having the handle secured thereto in accordance with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is asectional view on a plane indicated by the line III III, Fig. 2, the ear being detached from the body. Fig. i 4 is an elevation of the same parts and a por- 1 tion of the handle. Fig. 5 is a view similar I to Fig. 2, illustrating a modification of my i improvement. Fig. 6 is a section on the line i VI VI, Fig. 5. Figs. 7and 8 are detail views illustrating a further modification.

In the practice of my invention I use ears, consisting of a circular body portion 3, provided with extending lugs 2, through which are passed the rivets whereby the ears are socured to the body of the vessel. As shown in the drawings, the lugs 52 are so bent that the body portion 1 of the ears are a sul'licient distance away from the body of the vessel to permit the head of the bolt 3 to slip between the ears and the vessel, as shown in Figs. 2, 5, and

In order that the head of the bolt may bear centrally on the disk portion 1, the latter is radially slotted, as at a, for the rccep- H tion of the stem of the bolt.

The handle 4 is provided at its end with seats adapted to bear on the body portions of The stems of the bolts pass through the seats and through openings in the rear thereof. The handles are provided with sockets or countersinks 5 for the reception of the nuts 6, screwing onto the bolts.

In order to prevent the lateral disengagefrom the ears, a head or flange Tprojects from the inner surface of the body portions of the cars into a cup-shaped washer 8, which is slipped onto the bolt before the latter is placed in position on the cars. When the nut is screwed onto the bolt, the washer is drawn against the ear, the edges of the Washer fitting around the flange on the tear, thereby holding the bolt from lateral movement out of the slot in the car as long I as the nut is screwed up.

In lieu of employing a cup-shaped washer for lockingthe bolt as against movement out of the slot the body portion of the ears may be cupped or recessed, as at b in Figs. 5 and 6, for the reception of the head of the bolt, the slot a extending down into the cup or recess. As the slot is only slightly larger than the stem of the bolt, the latter cannot pass out of the slot as long as the bolt-head is held in the cup or recess in the car.

As shown in Figs. 7 and 8, the bolts will be retained in position if the ears be so attached to the vessel that the slots open in opposite directions. hen such construction and arrangement is employed, the handle itself will hold the bolts in engagement with the ears.

I claim herein as my inventi0ni. As a means for securing handles to coffee-pots, the combination of a bolt, an ear radially slotted for the reception of the stem of the bolt and means for holding the bolt in engagement with the ear, substantially as set forth.

As a means for securing handles to coffeepots, &rc., the combination of a bolt, and an ear having a socket or recess for the reception of the head of the bolt and having a slot of a width less than the diameter of the head of the bolt and extending into the slot or recess, substantially as set forth.

The combination 0facoffee-pot, radiallyslotted ears secured to the pot with the slots opening in opposite directions, a handle and bolts having their stems projecting through the slots and engaging the handles, substantially as set forth.
