To all whom, it may concern.'

Be it known that I, JOSEPH E. LIsBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nebraska City, in the county of Otoe and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grain-Doors, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in grain-doors; and its primary object is to provide a door of this character which is simple and durable in conL struction, which may be readily open ed without injuring or defacing the same, and which may be swung upward and secured in such position when not in use.

To these ends the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred forni of my invention, and in which- Figure lis an inner elevation of my imr proved car-door in position. Fig. 2 is an outer elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a section on line rcx, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section on line y y, Fig 2; and Fig. 5 is a detail view of a guide-rod and the means for securing the door thereto.

Referring to said figures by numerals of reference, 1 is a car of suitable construction having a doorway 2 therein, to each side of which, on the inner wall, is secured a guiderod 3, extending upward to a point near the roof or ceiling 4. Slidably mounted upon each of the rods 3 -is a plate 5, having a slot 6 therein for the reception of the rod 3. These plates are each swiveled to a bracket 5, arranged one at each of the upper corners of a door 7, of any suitable construction and extending across the .inner side of the doorway. This door is cut away at its lower central portion, forming a rectangular openin g vS, the sides of which are beveled inwardly, as at 9, forming, with a metal plate 10 secured along the inner edges of said opening, grooves for the reception of the beveled ends of a gate 11 of peculiar construction. Said gate is formed of two sections l2and 13, hinged together at their adjacent edges,and to the outer side of one, 12, of which is secured a plate or 4as, shown.

lever 14, extending over the section 13 and provided with a slot 15 for the reception of a staple 16, secured to said section. The plate 14 may be fastened to the staple in any suitableinanner, as by means of a pin 17.

The upper portion of the door 7 is provided with two brackets 1S and a button 19, adapted to hold the gate 11 out of the way when removed from the opening within the door.

The gate may be connected to the door in any suitable manner, as by means of chains 20, thereby preventing loss thereof.

In operation when it is. desired to unload a car, it is merely necessary to unlock the plate 14 and draw the same outward. This will cause the sections 12 and 13 to fold upon each other, withdrawing their edges from en gagement with the sides of the opening within the door. The gate maybe placed within the brackets 18 and the button turned over the edge thereof, firmly locking the same in position. W'hen it is desired to move the en-A tire door out of the way, it is merely necessary to slide the same upward upon the rods 3 to a point near the ceiling 4, where the plates 5 upon the door will be engaged and supported by hooks 2l, pivoted to the rods, The door is then swung upward upon the swivels of the plates and may be secured in raised position by means of a hook 22 on the ceiling 4.

In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of-my invention, but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.-
